Styres Leads Sprint SeriesJune 27, 2012 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) Rochester Knighthawks
Styres has had a progressively successful season, much like the Knighthawks. His latest victory was on his home track of Ohsweken Speedway on May 25th as Styres earned his fourth career win in a season-opening Sprint Car event at Ohsweken.
"That was a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone for coming back. I didn't win a single race last year so it's good to be in victory lane again. I am glad you are all here to witness it. Man, I am back!" he said after the race.
Styres has fully recovered from a broken arm he sustained in a crash last season. The win was his second after winning the 14th Annual "King of the 360's" Nationals at East Bay Raceway Park to kick off his 2012 season. Even more impressive is that he holds the lead in the CORR/PAK Sprints Standings.
"It is incredible. Getting injured and having everything taken away from you gives you a chance to have a better appreciation for the sport."
In his most recent race, the Northern Summer Nationals Round #2 at South Buxton Raceway, Styres won his heat. He finished 11th overall at the event, which was held in Merlin, Ontario. Despite not winning the race, he forecasted more victories in 2012.
"We have some big wins coming. We are the fastest car out of the box everywhere we go," said Styres. "We have stumbled upon something and we are in contention every race which is a night and day difference from last year."
Styres, known as the "Ohsweken Flyer," has already established himself as a premier driver, having won four Southern Ontario Sprints Championships and 29 Sprint Car victories. Yet, he is equally successful off the track, marketing the speedway and it's events. Along with promoting the 2012 World Champion Rochester Knighthawks, which is owned by his brother Curt, he has become very adept at hosting special events at the track.
More excitement will return to Ohsweken Speedway on July 30th and 31st with the World of Outlaws and the Six Nations Showdown. Tony Stewart, the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion, will participate in a Meet and Greet Monday night before hitting the track the following evening in the CORR/Pak 360 sprint program. He will defend his 2011 Six Nations Showdown victory, which was his first World of Outlaw Sprint Car win.
"It is the biggest event of the year," said Styres, who has become a close friend of Stewart. "I remember being in the front row with him 10 years ago at Volusia like it was yesterday. It still seems unreal."
