Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Despite gaining an early lead for the seventh straight game, the Quad Cities River Bandits let a lead go late, allowing single runs in the sixth and seventh innings of a 5-4 loss in the series finale with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.
Wisconsin catcher Tyler Roberts hit two home runs, including a seventh-inning solo shot to left field off Quad Cities left-hander Dail Villanueva (3-2) to break a 4-4 tie. Villanueva went seven innings in his second straight start but allowed five earned runs on six hits while walking two batters and striking out four. The loss snapped his three-decision winning streak.
After losing two of three at Wisconsin and four times in their last five games, the River Bandits (18-17) trail the Timber Rattlers (22-13) by four games in the Midwest League Western Division.
The River Bandits homered and scored first for their seventh straight contest, when shortstop Matt Williams connected for a first-inning, leadoff home run off Timber Rattlers right-hander Jacob Barnes. It was Williams' second home run on the season.
Villanueva could not hold the lead, allowing three earned runs in the bottom of the second, courtesy of back-to-back home runs by Wisconsin shortstop Yadiel Rivera and catcher Tyler Roberts with two outs.
To lead off the third, River Bandits second baseman Luis Mateo singled and advanced to second on a balk. After two outs were recorded, third baseman Colin Walsh came through with a single for his team-leading 23rd RBI of the year to trim the Wisconsin lead to 3-2. Catcher Juan Castillo put Quad Cities ahead 4-3 in the top of the fourth, bringing in two runs with his fifth home run of the season and second in as many games.
Wisconsin (22-13) tied the game in the sixth when center fielder Chadwin Stang and right fielder Max Walla walked to lead off the inning. Designated hitter Jason Rogers hit a game-tying single to left, scoring Stang from third. While Stang scored, Villanueva cut off the throw to the plate, and he threw out Walla trying to advance to third. Villanueva rebounded to strike out Timber Rattlers first baseman Nick Ramirez and induced an inning-ending ground ball to Williams at shortstop.
The Timber Rattlers pulled ahead in the seventh on Roberts' home run to left field, his second of the game.
The River Bandits were held to one hit and two total baserunners in the final five innings by right-hander Andrew Moye (3-0), who struck out seven batters without walking any.
Quad Cities begins a four-game series with Cedar Rapids at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday night. Left-hander Hector Hernandez (2-2) is scheduled to face Kernels right-hander Cam Bedrosian (0-1).
