Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Kannapolis, NC - The Kannapolis Intimidators scored all 11 of their runs in the first three innings to run away with an 11-1 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night to even the three-game series between the teams at one game apiece.

All 11 Kannapolis runs were unanswered as the GreenJackets led 1-0 in the first on a Shawn Payne RBI single. With one out and a run already home in the inning, the GreenJackets loaded the bases and were looking for more. Kannapolis starter Myles Jaye had other ideas, striking out two straight hitters to leave the bases full and end the inning.

The Intimidators would bat around in the first and second innings, eventually sending Augusta starter Clayton Blackburn to an early shower. After a double and an infield single put runners at first and third, Kevan Smith hit a would-be double play ball that was booted at short to bring home the tying run. Later in the inning, Rangel Ravelo's RBI single gave Kannapolis a 2-1 lead that they wouldn't lose. Keenyn Walker drove home two more in the inning to push the lead out to 4-1.

In the second, things got even worse for Blackburn. With two on and no one out, Smith singled home two runs to stretch the Kannapolis lead to 6-1. After Blackburn got two outs in the inning and it looked as though he might at least survive the frame, Mark Haddow tagged him for a two-run home run on what would be his final pitch of the night. Blackburn (0-2) left after just 1.2 innings, the shortest start for an Augusta starter this season. He allowed eight runs - seven earned - on eight hits and a walk while striking out three.

Scotty Walker relieved and walked the first man he faced before yielding a two-run home run to Dusty Harvard that capped a six-run Intimidators second and gave Kannapolis a 10-1 lead. They'd add a run in the third without getting a hit in the inning as Ross Wilson scored on a wild pitch to make it an 11-1 game.

After Jaye hit Brett Krill in the first to load the bases with one out, he found a groove. In his first start with the White Sox organization after being traded from the Blue Jays in the offseason, Jaye struck out two to get out of the first - part of six in a row fanned by the righty. Jaye (1-0) allowed a run on four hits in five innings, striking out seven - one shy of a career-high. Jaye and reliever Bryan Blough retired 20 of 22 GreenJackets in a span that stretched from the first until the eighth inning.

The loss snaps Augusta's three-game winning streak, but the GreenJackets will look to take two of three from Kannapolis with Chris Marlowe (1-0, 3.63) on the mound in Friday's series finale against lefty Brandon Parrent (0-1, 8.10). First pitch from Kannapolis comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.

The GreenJackets return home on Thursday May 10th to open a series with the Greenville Drive on the second Thirsty Thursday of the year, presented by The Library, with dollar soft drinks and draft beers available.

Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
