Rochester Americans News Release
(Binghamton, NY)... Paul Szczechura's 16 th goal of the season 1:11 into overtime propelled the Rochester Americans to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Binghamton Senators at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday night. The Amerks trailed by one for most of the third period before Nick Crawford tied the game with less than four minutes to go.
Rochester was led offensively by Szczechura (1+1), Mark Voakes (0+2), and Colin Stuart (0+2), each of whom contributed a pair of points. Travis Turnbull, T.J. Brennan and Crawford also lit the lamp in the winning effort, while David Leggio finished with 33 saves to set a new AHL career-high with 23 wins on the season.
Wacey Hamilton, Andre Petersson and Pat Cannone scored for Binghamton and netminder Mike McKenna turned away 41 of 45 shots faced.
The Amerks opened up the scoring at 7:58 for a 1-0 lead, as Turnbull converted his 12 th of the season. From the right boards, Voakes fed Turnbull at the near post to place a backhander over the outstretched pad of McKenna.
Binghamton knotted things up at once apiece with a power-play goal 2:27 into the middle frame. The rebound of a Patrick Wiercoch blast from the high slot bounced to the stick of Hamilton, who quickly buried it past Leggio.
Rochester regained the lead by a score of 2-1 with the man-advantage at 11:34 of the second. Brennan let a wrist shot go from center-point that eluded a maze of bodies in the slot and found its way through McKenna. The goal represented Brennan's 14 th of the season, tying him for the lead amongst AHL blueliners.
Petersson took advantage of an odd man rush less than three minutes later to even the game at two for the Sens. Driving down the right-wing, the first-year forward elected to shoot and beat Leggio with a low wrister.
Binghamton took the lead for the first time in the contest just 15 seconds into the third period when Cannone cashed in the rebound of a long-range slapper from Derek Grant.
Crawford's game-tying goal came at the 16:35 mark of the final frame when he sent a turn-around bid from the mid-slot over the glove of McKenna.
Szczechura won it for the Amerks at 1:11 of the extra period, using a Binghamton defender as a screen and burying a wrister to the top shelf.
The Amerks welcome the Syracuse Crunch to Rochester on Wednesday, March 21 for a 7:05 p.m. contest at The Blue Cross Arena. It will be the eighth of 10 meetings between the rivals and will be carried live on 107.3 FM and 1280 AM, Rochester's Sports Talk.
