Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux City, IA--Another rough second period for the Stampede was the difference in a 6-3 loss to the Sioux City Musketeers Friday night at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City. The Musketeers scored four times in the second period en route to their victory that dropped the Stampede to 12-20-1 on the season and into 8th place in the Western Conference, one point behind Tri-City for 7th. Austyn Young, Dan Carlson and Matt Van Voorhis scored in the loss for the Stampede who fell to 4-11-1 in road games this season and 1-12-1 in Friday night games this year.
After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Stampede struck through with the first goal of the game with four minutes remaining when Austyn Young's shot from the right circle that beat Musketeer netminder Matt Skoff to give the Herd a 1-0 lead. It looked like that would hold into the second period, but the Musketeers got two goals 36 seconds apart from Kyle Criscuolo and Brad Robbins to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room.
In the second, Sioux City continued with their strong play scoring 9:35 into the period when Noah Nelson stole the puck at center and scored on a breakaway to give the Muskies a 3-1 edge. 58 seconds later, Sioux City scored again when Kyle Criscuolo batted in a loose puck in front of the net for his second of the night to make it a 4-1 game. David Henry's blast from the right point that went into the upper right hand corner of the net and beat Stampede goaltender Charlie Lindgren made it a 5-1 game. That was the end of the night for Lindgren who stopped 17 of 22 shots. Dan Carlson got the Stampede back into the game at 16:21 when his pass attempt behind the goal went off a Musketeer stick and through the pads of Matt Skoff to make it 5-2. The celebration would be short lived however, as Criscuolo recorded a hat trick with a goal at 17:05 when he knocked home a rebound in the crease and under the stick of Stephon Williams. Sioux City outshot the Herd 12 to 8 in the period.
Sioux Falls pulled within three in the third period when Matt Van Voorhis tallied his fifth goal of the season at 9:25. Bryan Moore wristed a shot onto Skoff who made the first save, but the rebound bounced out to Van Voorhis who backhanded a shot into the back of the net to make it 6-3. The Herd tried to mount a rally, but couldn't muster anything further past Skoff. Ryan Keller nearly tallied the Herd's fourth goal later in the period on a shorthanded breakaway, but was denied by the pad of Skoff.
Sioux City outshot the Stampede 30-28 on the night. Sioux Falls was 0 for 6 on the powerplay, but were 7 for 7 on the penalty kill. Sioux Falls will look to rebound and move into seventh place Saturday night when they travel to Kearney, NE to take on the Tri-City Storm at 7:05 PM.
