Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Week in Review

The Black Hawks earned just their second comeback victory of the season, recovering from a 3-1 deficit Friday to top the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 6-5 on the road. Mike Huntebrinker scored twice and Vince Hinostroza contributed a goal and two assists, while goalie Cal Petersen earned the win with 26 saves in relief. Petersen was also in net Saturday and made 31 stops in a 6-3 decision against the Sioux City Musketeers. The Hawks were led by Taylor Cammarata with a hat trick and Ryan Papa, who recorded two goals and two assists.

Wittchow Quietly Climbing

Defenseman Eddie Wittchow was +2 in both of the Hawks' weekend games, giving him a positive or even plus-minus rating in ten consecutive contests. Wittchow leads Waterloo in the plus-minus metric at +19, which ranks fifth in the United States Hockey League. The last Black Hawks defenseman to reach +20 was Dan Sova, who concluded the 2009-2010 season at +23.

Taking Their Shots

Waterloo put a season-high 51 shots on goal against Sioux City Saturday. The figure included 26 chances in the third period, during which the Hawks scored three times. Twenty-six shots match the most in one period by a single USHL team this season; the Green Bay Gamblers sent the same number of shots toward the Chicago Steel net in the second period on January 8th. The last time the Hawks managed 50 pucks on frame in a single game was last season in a 10-0 decision against the Steel on March 23, 2011.

Cowbell Cup Update

Friday's victory in Cedar Rapids moved the Hawks into a tie for the lead among the three teams vying for the inaugural Cowbell Cup. Waterloo and the Dubuque Fighting Saints each have six wins and a dozen points, while the RoughRiders are 1-6-2 in the competition, good for four points. The next game in the series is on Friday between the Saints and Riders. The Hawks' next Cowbell contest is January 28th in Cedar Rapids.

More Miles on the Bus

On Friday the Hawks begin a string of four consecutive road games. They travel to meet the Tri-City Storm twice this weekend before matchups with the Youngstown Phantoms and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. It is the longest road trip remaining on Waterloo's schedule. The Black Hawks opened the year with four straight away games and posted a 2-1-1 record then. Waterloo is 7-5-2 on the road this season
