Mississippi RiverKings News Release
Southaven, Miss. - The Mississippi RiverKings kept on their winning ways as they downed the Mississippi Surge 3-2 in a back and forth game at the Desoto Civic Center on Tuesday night.
The Surge got the scoring started midway through the first period as Matt Kinnunen got the puck past David Wilson to give the Surge a 1-0 lead.
The RiverKings responded just two minutes later as Jeff Topilko broke into the Surge zone off a Mike Tuomi outlet pass to rip a shot over Kiefer Smiley to tie the game at one.
But just 50 seconds later, the Surge had an answer. Shawn Skelly put a pass through the crease and Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn tapped it in around Wilson as the Surge retook the lead.
Scoring subsided until Mike Tuomi broke in alone against Smiley and put a wrister over the netminder's glove hand to tie up the game at the 5:31 mark of the third period.
The teams skated in a three on three overtime period, but neither team could capitalize on odd-man rushes as David Wilson made key saves to keep the RiverKings in the game. Adam Stuart took a two-minute holding penalty, giving the 'Kings a four on three man advantage, but they could not convert as the visitors blocked shots and kept the puck away from the net as the 'Kings could only muster three shots in overtime.
In the shootout, Nick Vandenbeld scored on the RiverKings' first opportunity and the team never looked back. David Wilson stopped all four Surge shooters and Mark Magnowski netted home the clinching goal to give the RiverKings the 3-2 victory.
David Wilson took the win in his second straight start as he turned aside 17 of 19 shots against as he improved to 7-4-1. Kiefer Smiley stopped 22 of 24 as he fell to 5-3-2 on the season.
