Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL) - Ryan Quigley set the Frontier League's single-season saves record in 2011 and was named to the All-Independent Leagues Team.

In 2012 he'll finally get the chance to play affiliated baseball.

The Joliet Slammers announced Thursday they'd sold Quigley's contract to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He impressed Arizona's front office during multiple Slammers games with a fastball reaching 96 miles per hour and a nasty slider.

"This is what independent baseball is all about," Manager Bart Zeller said. "Players like Ryan who work hard, are good citizens and put up good numbers deserve the chance in affiliated baseball. He was a leader on our pitching staff and we are very proud of this accomplishment."

Quigley, 26, was named the Slammers' closer right away in 2011 and he took full advantage of the opportunity as he saved a league record 28 games in the regular season and five more in the playoffs. The Joliet Catholic alumnus notched an impressive 2.32 ERA in the regular season, striking out 72 batters in 42.2 innings.

"Coming off the championship, this was the next goal," Quigley said. "I'll report to Diamondbacks camp on March 1 and I couldn't be more excited to show them what I can do and hopefully one day play in the major leagues."

In the meantime Quigley is helping coach St. Francis baseball and is most likely going to play some ball in Mexico before joining Arizona in Spring Training.

Quigley becomes the second Slammers player signed to affiliated baseball. Aaron Dott's contract was purchased by the New York Yankees during the 2011 season.

"It's very rare for a player his age without affiliated experience to get a shot, but Ryan's hard work and dedication has paid off," Slammers VP of Baseball Operations Ron Biga said. "We as an organization could not be prouder of Quigs."
