Mammoth Announces Retirement of Forward Brian Langtry

DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth announced today that forward Brian Langtry has retired from the National Lacrosse League following a decorated and illustrious playing career. The team, which has designated Opening Night 2012 (Saturday, January 14) as "Brian Langtry Night", will retire his #6 jersey and hang it from the Pepsi Center rafters that evening.

"Brian exemplifies what the Colorado Mammoth is all about," said team President & General Manager Steve Govett. "Grit, determination, heart and desire were staples of Brian's game. Every time he put on the Mammoth jersey, he always had a knack for scoring the timely goal, creating a big hit, or getting a key loose ball. I speak for the entire organization when I tell you he will be missed tremendously."

The NLL Rookie of the Year in the franchise's first season in Colorado in 2003, Langtry exploded onto the local lacrosse scene with 28 goals, 34 assists and 107 loose balls. In 2006, the Massapequa, N.Y. native followed up a 50-point regular season with 15 points (10 goals, 5 assists) in three playoff games en route to the Mammoth winning the Champion's Cup.

Langtry's personal accolades include single-game career-highs in goals (9) and points (13) in a March 2008 game in Portland. The Hofstra alumnus reached the 500-career-point plateau on April 9, 2011 in a must-win road test against the Rush. His four-goal, two-assist night included a third-quarter assist to reach the milestone, followed by two goals of his own later in the period to put away Edmonton in the 13-6 Colorado victory.

In May 2011, Langtry wore the red, white and blue for Team USA at the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships and took home a bronze medal. Known for his hustle and humor as much as his lacrosse ability, Langtry stole the hearts of local sports enthusiasts and left a lasting impression on anyone who ever saw him play.

""Brian was the most intense lacrosse player I've ever played with," said Mammoth transition player Nick Carlson, a teammate of Langtry's since 2004. "It's sad to see him go; he's going to be missed. I don't think anyone can really take his place in terms of what he's done for the community, done for the Mammoth, and done for Americans playing the indoor game."

Widely regarded as one of the greatest U.S.-born athletes to ever play box lacrosse, Langtry will join lacrosse legend Gary Gait as the only players to have their jersey numbers retired by the Mammoth.

"What an honor," said Langtry. "Gary was the reason I went to Syracuse lacrosse camp as a kid, and I have so much respect for him. Being remembered with him is something to hang my hat on."

The team said it plans to keep Langtry involved in the organization in some capacity.
