Penticton, BC - The Flames Prospects will have to wait at least one more day to earn their first win of the Young Stars tournament in Penticton, after falling 6-1 to the San Jose Sharks Prospects in the opening match of the event.
Roman Horak scored the lone goal for the Flames on a penalty shot awarded in the third period, but the Flames otherwise couldn't beat the net-minding tandem of the Sharks, even on a second penalty shot opportunity for Sven Baertschi late in the game. It wasn't the start to the tournament that the Flames Prospects had in mind, but the squad did have segments of sustained pressure early in the game, outshooting the Sharks Prospects 16-5 in the opening frame. Carter Bancks got in a fight with Sharks prospect Ben Thompson in the second period and got the best of the 6'4" winger, who happens to weigh 25 pounds more than Bancks.
Joni Ortio allowed six goals on 23 shots, admittedly not at his best, while his counterparts for the Sharks stopped all but one of 39 shots they saw. "My timing was off today and the adjustment from the international ice (size) will improve". Coach Troy Ward echoed Ortio saying "it's important that he's confident in himself moving forward".
Next action for the Flames Prospects comes tomorrow September 12th when they face the host Vancouver Canucks Prospects at 4:00 PM PST at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
