Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - In the final week of the regular season, the Newport Gulls find themselves in three familiar positions: They've got the best record in the NECBL, they just clinched another division championship, and they're ranked highly in the latest summer collegiate baseball poll by Perfect Game USA.

The latest rankings by Perfect Game USA, released July 26, names Newport the 11th -best summer collegiate baseball team in the country. This is by far the highest the Gulls have been ranked all season after not appearing in the rankings last week. Newport is the highest-ranked NECBL team in the poll. Holyoke (14th ), Danbury (25th ), and Keene (34th ) are the league's other representatives in the poll. The Gulls were also picked the third best team in New England, following Cape Cod League squads Hyannis (second) and Orleans (seventh).

The Gulls have been on fire over the last four weeks. After starting the season 6-7, they have posted a 19-6 record over their last 25 games-easily the best record in the NECBL over that stretch. Newport has a pair of the league's longest win streaks in July: A seven-game tear from July 10-16 and a current eight-game streak that started July 21.

Newport clinched the NECBL Eastern Division championship with an 11-2 win over Mystic on Thursday and currently holds the best record in the league with a 25-13 mark. The division crown is the Gulls' eighth in 11 seasons of existence and for the 11th time in as many seasons Newport has won at least 25 games.

Four games-three of which are at home-remain on the Gulls' regular-season schedule. Newport will host Old Orchard Beach on Friday before visiting Laconia on Saturday. The Gulls finish with two home games-Sunday against Sanford and Monday against New Bedford-and are in the driver's seat to secure home-field advantage throughout the NECBL playoffs. All Newport home games begin at 6:35 p.m. at Cardines Field.

The postseason begins Aug. 3 with the division semifinals. Newport will face the Eastern Division's fourth- place team in a best-of-three series to begin at Cardines Field.
