Mallards Split Double-Header with La Crosse

LA CROSSE, WI - July 16, 2011. After a rainout postponed Friday's action, the Madison Mallards and the La Crosse Loggers played a double-header Saturday night at Copeland Park, with each team winning one game. The Mallards took game one 9-7 and La Crosse won game two 5-4.

Game One

The Mallards took game one behind their biggest offensive output of the second half, beating the Loggers 9-7.

Four Mallards had multiple hits in the game, led by Justin Parr (Illinois) who had a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in the game. Matt Juengel (Texas A&M) also hit a home run, his second of the season.

All of the Mallards' four All-Stars were also in action in game one.

Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin) went 1-for-3.

Starter Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech), the third All-Star to play in the game, went three innings, allowed no runs on one hit, walked two, and struck out four. He did not factor in the decision.

The win went to Travis Parker (St. Louis). Parker pitched two innings allowing two runs and is now 2-0 on the season. The fourth All-Star to make an appearance was Matt Milroy (Illinois), and he pitched the seventh to notch his third save of the season.

Game Two

Game two was a different story for the Mallards, as their bats were held in check by the Loggers. La Crosse won the game 5-4.

The Mallards out-hit the Loggers 10-6, but could not muster more runs. Madison was lead by Owen, Mike McQuillan (Iowa), and Matt Mirabal (St. Scholastica) who each had two hits.

Parker Schrage (Madison College) took the loss for the Mallards and is now 0-2 this season.

The Mallards have now reached the All-Star break along with the rest of the Northwoods League and will not play Sunday. Nate Theunissen has been selected as the Mallards' representative for the Home Run Derby in Wisconsin Rapids this evening, and he will join teammates Jordan Owen, Matt Milroy, and Rusty Shellhorn at the All-Star game at Witter Field on Monday. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

As a team, the Mallards are off until July 20 when they go to Waterloo for a two-game series with the Bucks. Wednesday's game one will start at 6:35 p.m. and game two on Thursday will also start at 6:35 p.m.
