Rome Emperors News Release

Rome, GA -The Rome Braves defeated the Greenville Drive Thursday night at State Mutual Stadium in walk off fashion before a crowd of 2,312. The victory gives the Braves their first consecutive wins since June 6th and 7th against Kannapolis. The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 7pm.

Rome took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after a Xander Bogaerts throwing error allowed Tony Mueller to reach and later score on a Tommy La Stella RBI single. Greenville quickly responded in the top of the fourth with Sean Coyle reaching with the Drive's first hit of the night and scoring on an RBI single by Brandon Jacobs to tie the game 1-1.

Evan Gattis (11) put the Braves back on top with a monster solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth to give Rome a 2-1 lead. Two Innings later in the bottom of the sixth Rome would again benefit from the long ball, this time off the bat of Chris Garcia (8). With one on and one out Garcia connected for the second time in the past two nights to give the Braves a 4-1 cushion.

Gary Moran turned in six innings for the Braves with a season high nine strikeouts and one run on three hits. Unfortunately the Braves bullpen would spoil Moran's efforts by giving up one run in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings and sending the game into extra innings with a 4-4 tie.

In the bottom of the tenth Matt Lipka sparked the Braves offense when he tripled to left field with one out. After Tommy La Stella was hit by a pitch, last week's South Atlantic League Player of the Week Edward Salcedo came to the plate and delivered the game winning hit to give the Braves a 5-4 victory.

Tyler Hess (1-3) picks up the win for Rome and Dennis Neuman(0-1) takes the loss for Greenville.

Roster Update: RHP Thomas Berryhill has been released from the organization.

Both teams return to the field tomorrow at 7pm for game two of the four game set and fan favorite Birdzerk will entertain fans during the game. For ticket information, contact the Rome Braves at 706-378-5144 or log onto www.romebraves.com.
