United Football League Announces 2011 Schedule

June 9, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1) News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Thursday, June 9 - Two household head coaching names will duel on the opening weekend of the 2011 United Football League season and games will be played for the first time on Sundays when the league's third season kicks off.

A total of 20 regular-season games will be played over a period of 10 weeks, beginning on the weekend of August 13-14 and there is an abundance of mouthwatering clashes and developing rivalries to whet the appetite of football fans everywhere.

Renowned former NFL head coaches MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER and JERRY GLANVILLE have not stood on opposite sidelines since September 1, 1991, when they kicked off the NFL season in charge of the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons respectively. They will go head to head again on UFL opening kickoff weekend when the Virginia Destroyers host the Hartford Colonials on Saturday, August 13 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.

"I will be in Virginia for the season kickoff and am excited both to witness the birth of professional football in the region and to see how these two veteran coaches match up against each other," said UFL Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE.

The following day, JOE MOGLIA makes his head-coaching debut 28 years after he served as a collegiate defensive coordinator when his Omaha Nighthawks travel to Sacramento to take on DENNIS GREEN and the Mountain Lions at Hornet Stadium. Two-time reigning champion JIM FASSEL and the Las Vegas Locos will sit at home and watch opening weekend unfold before beginning their threepeat campaign on the road in Sacramento on Saturday, August 20.

The season culminates with the United Football League Championship Game on the weekend of October 21-23 between the top two teams in the final regular season standings at a venue to be determined. The 2011 UFL schedule features 11 games on Saturdays, five games on Sundays and four games on Fridays.

All games are subject to change and kick off times and TV broadcast details for all games will be available at a later date. For season ticket information, football fans may visit www.UFL-Football.com/tickets.Tickets are expected to go on sale within the next one or two weeks.

"We set high standards in our two previous seasons and I am confident we will treat our fans to more exciting top-quality football. We have added more recognizable and successful head coaches to our league and they in turn are signing a great blend of experienced and promising players who will produce fireworks on the field and create a buzz in our stadiums. The quality of play is expected to be even better this year with more recognizable and experienced NFL players making up the teams' rosters.

"More than 100 UFL players have gone on to sign with NFL teams during our first two years and with our season ending in mid-October this year we again anticipate a large number of our players joining NFL rosters."

The much anticipated debut of UFL football in Virginia will come 418 days after the league announced on June 21, 2010 that the Hampton Roads region would host professional football's newest team. The Destroyers will play their first-ever game at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex against Jerry Glanville's Hartford Colonials on Saturday, August 13.

"Jerry is recognized for his astute skills in coaching defense and his special teams play will be formidable," said Schottenheimer of his opponent. "You have to take one game at a time, and find a way to win that game. The important factor is staying healthy throughout the season."

Glanville is also relishing his return to the professional game and added: "Marty and I have done this before. The league was pretty smart. No one will know what Marty's going to do; no one will know what I am going to do. Whoever would open up with us would have had a big disadvantage.

"That first game, hang on to your hat. You have no idea what's going to happen."

The second game of the UFL opening weekend will be the league's first-ever game played on a Sunday. The Sacramento Mountain Lions will host the Omaha Nighthawks on August 14 in what will be the first game of the JOE MOGLIA era with the Nighthawks. In 2010, Omaha (22,786) and Sacramento (18,125) topped the UFL in average home attendance.

"It is exciting for us because our first two games are at home," said Coach Green. "It hopefully gives us a chance to build some momentum. I think Omaha comes into the year as one of the favorites. I think they will start fast again this year. It will be very exciting."

A week later on Sunday, August 21, the Nighthawks will debut at the team's new TD Ameritrade Park home field when the Virginia Destroyers visit.

"That is going to be a big deal," said Coach Moglia. "TD Ameritrade Park is truly a first-class, beautiful stadium. To be able to play there is going to be exciting and I hope Omaha is going to be excited about it. I feel really good about the schedule. We know the teams and coaches we're going to play against and I'm ready to get started."

Each of the five UFL teams will have two bye weeks during the season, and two-time defending UFL champion the Las Vegas Locomotives will sit out Week 1.

"There's a couple different ways of looking at it," said Locos coach Jim Fassel of the open first weekend. "You really don't get extra days. You get x amount of days before your first game. We've got to really focus in and concentrate, because our first game is going to be against a team that already had a game. And the old saying goes, you make your most improvement between the first and second game. We can't be making a lot of mistakes."

The Locos begin their title defense at Sacramento in Week 2 then make a welcome return to Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 27 against the Omaha Nighthawks.

UFL Vice President of Football Administration BRENDAN ROWE said: "With the schedule being released today, we are that much closer to hitting the field again. The next step is Training Camp to put in a solid framework for players to respond to. When the regular season begins on August 13, it is all about becoming a team and how they can successfully function together. I look forward to being in Virginia that opening weekend for a rematch of Schottenheimer hosting Glanville. It will be very special weekend for the entire United Football League as we kickoff our third season."
