Texas Legends News Release
Frisco, TX (March 31, 2011) - With a chance to head to the playoffs in their inaugural season, the Texas Legends fell 120-118 to the Austin Toros on Thursday night inside the Cedar Park Center.
Following a Fort Wayne Mad Ants loss earlier in the night, the Legends learned that with a win tonight they would have clinched the eighth and final playoff spot in the NBA D-League Playoffs.
However, following the loss the Legends still hold their own destiny. With a win on Saturday night in Austin in the final game of the season, Texas will be on their way to the playoffs.
In a back-and-forth battle in the first half that saw nine lead changes and five ties, it was Austin taking a six-point lead, 59-53, into halftime.
Following his 20-point first half performance last night, Joe Alexander poured in 16 points in the opening half tonight, while Antonio Daniels added 13 points. Aubrey Coleman and Carldell Johnson scored 12 points each in the first half for Austin.
Trailing 61-53 early in the third quarter, Texas used a 12-4 run to tie the game at 65. However, the Toros answered with an 8-0 run of their own to regain the lead and took an 83-80 lead into the final quarter.
Daniels knocked down a wide open three-pointer with 2:57 to go in the fourth to tie the game back up at 103, but on the ensuing possession Coleman hit a driving lay up and drew the foul to give Austin a three-point lead.
Trailing 108-103 with under a minute to go, Alexander knocked in a three-pointer to make it a two-point game, but Carldell Johnson responded with a slicing lay up in the lane to give Austin a four-point lead with under 30 seconds to go.
Austin went a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line in the final half minute to preserve the victory.
Alexander finished with a season-high 38 points, while Daniels contributed 18 points and 10 assists.
Marcus Cousin led six double-digit scorers for Austin with 22 points to go along with 11 rebounds, as Kevin Palmer earned a double-double with 20 points and 10 boards.
The loss dropped the Legends to 23-26 on the year, while Austin improved to 22-27.
The Legends will stay in Austin to take on the Toros in the final game of the regular season on Saturday night with tip-off set for 7:30 PM.
Great tickets for all Legends home games are still available by calling (214) 469-0822 or emailing the team at info@TexLegends.com.
