Bakersfield's Byars to Participate in NBA D-League Slam Dunk Contest

February 18, 2011 - NBA Development League (D-League)

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 18, 2011 - Derrick Byars of the Bakersfield Jam was today selected to replace Tulsa's Latavious Williams in the 2011 NBA D-League All-Star Slam Dunk Contest during NBA D-League Dream Factory Friday Night presented by Haier, which will take place tonight at 11 p.m. ET on Center Court at NBA Jam Session presented by adidas.

Byars, a 6-7, 220-pound forward out of Vanderbilt, was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round (42nd overall) of the 2007 NBA Draft. Byars is averaging 18.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 16 games with the Jam this season. Byars joins reigning NBA D-League All-Star Slam Dunk champion Dar Tucker (New Mexico Thunderbirds), Marqus Blakely (Iowa Energy) and 2011 GATORADE Call-Up Chris Johnson (Dakota Wizards / Portland Trail Blazers) in the Slam Dunk Contest, a two-round competition. The four players may complete two dunks in Round 1, with five judges each awarding between six and 10 points for every made dunk. The two players with the highest composite scores after Round 1 move on to Round 2, and the player with the highest composite score of the possible two dunks in Round 2 wins.

The NBA Development League Dream Factory Friday Night presented by Haier, an innovative skills competition modeled after the popular NBA All-Star Saturday Night presented by State Farm, returns for the fourth consecutive year to Center Court at NBA Jam Session presented by adidas. All three events - the Slam Dunk and Three-Point Shooting Contests and the second annual NBA D-League Haier Shooting Stars - will steam live on NBA Futurecast at nba.com/dleague.

The fifth-annual NBA D-League All-Star Game presented by SonoSite will follow on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 5 p.m. ET, at Center Court at NBA Jam Session presented by adidas.
