Burke Unveiled as Player/Assistant Coach

RICHMOND, VA - (Wednesday, January 12, 2011) - The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce that veteran midfielder Mike Burke will return to the Kickers pro team as a player/assistant coach for the 2011 season, pending USL and USSF approval.

"Mike is the perfect fit for this position," comments Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Head Coach and Director of Soccer. "He has the respect and admiration of the team and has for many years demonstrated his passion and commitment to the Richmond community. Hiring Mike as player/assistant we have the best of both worlds. We retain an experienced and dynamic player while gaining a young enthusiastic coach who is eager to contribute to our future success."

Burke enters his 12th campaign in Richmond in 2011 after finishing as USL Assists Champion and All-League Second Team honoree last season en route to his sixth Championship appearance with the club. Notching one goal and five assists in 2010, Burke added a sixth assist during the Kickers 3-1 U.S. Open Cup Second Round win in June. A four-time USL-2 All-League First Team selection, Burke resides at the top the Kickers all-time assists category with 61. Making 24 appearances with the Kickers in 2010, the Jacksonville, Florida native eclipsed Tony Williams in the all-time matches played category with 273. Logging nearly 18,000 minutes in a Kickers uniform, club's perennial fan favorite has garnered Supporter's Choice MVP honors on six consecutive occasions.

"I am extremely excited about my new role with the pro team," adds Burke. "This will be a great learning experience. I look forward to joining the coaching staff while also offering valuable minutes on the field."

An advocate for youth player development, Burke also acts as a Technical Director with the Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club. He oversees the Advanced Development Soccer League (ADSL) program while coaching Richmond Kickers U-12 Girls Elite and U-13 Boys Elite teams. Burke resides in Midlothian with his wife, Audrey, son, Declan (3) and daughter, Piper (1).
