Louisiana IceGators News Release

LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators (7-23) entered Tuesday night's game on a twelve game losing streak. The streak began on December 9 when the 'Gators fell to the Surge 0-2and the Mississippi Surge (17-9) was the team in town to take on the 'Gators on Tuesday. The Surge found success and defeated the IceGators 5-4 and extended the losing streak.

The first period began with a methodical pace with each team trying to figure the other team out. The Surge forced the 'Gators to make the first mistake when Beau McLaughlin was called for slashing. This put the Surge on a power play, in which they have an 18.4% success rate. The Surge's Jason Beeman scored the power play to put Mississippi up 1-0. About six minutes later, Ryan McCarthy (MIS) scored his fourth goal of the season and put the 'Gators in a two goal hole. With 2:35 left in the period, Tanner Hlookoff (MIS) was called for cross checking. Twelve seconds later Ryan Fultz (LOU) scored his first goal of the game and cut the Surge lead in half.

Louisiana entered the second period down 2-1 but quickly capitalized on the momentum built at the end of the first period. Less than 3:30 into the period Fultz struck again with assistance from Dennis Sicard (LOU) and Paul DAgostino (LOU). Six minutes later Sicard got his second point of the game when he scored and gave the 'Gators their first lead of the game, 3-2. The IceGators kept the scoring streak going when Tobias Karlsson (LOU) scored with 6:40 remaining in the second period. With 3:30 left, Rusty Masters (MIS) was pulled down from behind by Gentry Zollars (LOU) on a break away awarded a penalty shot. Masters was successful on the ensuing penalty shot and cut the 'Gators lead to 4-3.

Mississippi entered the game 0-6 when trailing after the second period and the 'Gators were 4-2. That is where the two teams began the third period with the IceGators leading 4-3. Louisiana opened the period putting pressure on Kyle McNulty (MIS), Surge's goalie, but he was up to the challenge. Mississippi was the first team to strike in the period though. With 17:11 left in the game, Chris Chambers (MIS) scored his fourth goal of the season and knotted the game at 4-4. The Surge took the lead back from the 'Gators when Jason Cassells (MIS) scored with 8:51. Each of the goals came in the middle of a stretch where the Surge had 13 unanswered shots on goal. With the IceGators trailing by one goal, they began a power play with 1:37 left in the game after Jeff Grant (MIS) was called for high sticking. Karlsson was able to get two shots on goal but none of them went past McNulty and the 'Gators fell short again 5-4.

"It's disappointing to play such a good game for two period but not be able to finish the game," answered the IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski. "This is a game that we should have won but we didn't come out for the third period with the same fire as we did in the first two periods. This is a three period game and we have to play all three periods with the same level of intensity. It can't fall off."

The 'Gators will hit the road for three in a row. The first is on January 6 at Augusta. The 'Gators will then travel north for two games against the Knoxville IceBears on January 7th and 8th. Don't miss your chance to bring a group to the game and take advantage of the 10 for 10 program. Groups of 10 can purchase tickets for $10.
