Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - Wilmington Blue Rocks catcher Wil Myers was named to the Sporting News All-Minor League Team as the best player at his position. Myers joins fellow Royals farmhands Tim Collins and Mike Moustakas, who were also honored by the publication. The Royals were the only organization in baseball with multiple selections.
Myers split the season between the Low-A Burlington Bees and Wilmington, batting a combined .315 with 37 doubles, 14 home runs, 83 RBIs and 70 runs scored in 126 games. With the Rocks, he posted a .346 average with 18 doubles, 38 RBIs and 28 runs in 58 games. The 19-year-old began his Wilmington tenure as the youngest player in the Carolina League, but did not let that stop him from posting two separate double-digit hitting streaks. He was the Royals' third-round selection in the 2009 draft.
Moustakas was named the Minor League Hitter of the Year. The former Blue Rock, who became the first Wilmington player in a decade to hit 16 home runs in a season in 2009, had a year to remember in 2010. Moustakas tied for the minor league lead with a combined 36 home runs for the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals and the Triple-A Omaha Royals. Kansas City's first-round pick in 2007 batted .322 with 41 doubles, 124 RBIs and 94 runs scored.
The 21-year-old has accumulated several honors throughout the 2010 season. He was selected as the Royals' George Brett Minor League Hitter of the Year and the Texas League Player of the Year. In addition, Moustakas was chosen to represent the Royals in the All-Star Futures Game along with Blue Rock Eric Hosmer.
Collins was acquired from the Atlanta Braves on July 31, 2010 with outfielder Gregor Blanco and pitcher Jesse Chavez in exchange for outfielder Rick Ankiel and pitcher Kyle Farnsworth. Collins was 3-1 in 2010 with a 2.02 ERA in 56 appearances. The left-hander struck out 108 and walked only 27 in 71.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen.
The Blue Rocks return to the field on April 8, 2011 as they open their season in Myrtle Beach, SC against the Pelicans. The full 2011 schedule will be announced later this off-season.
