San Diego Sockers News Release
The San Diego Sockers hired John Kentera as their new general manager, the team announced today. Kentera agrees to a one-year deal to head the business and gameday operations of the Sockers as they seek to defend their 2009-2010 PASL-Pro North American championship.
"I am honored and pleased to have this opportunity to work not only in my home town, but with the greatest indoor soccer franchise in history," said Kentera, "The Sockers have tailored this job so I can continue my broadcasting career in addition to working with a professional sports organization. This is a dream come true."
Kentera is well known as "the Coach" to sports fans throughout San Diego county and Southern California thanks to his 20 years of informing and entertaining listeners on the radio. Currently working at XX 1090-AM, Kentera has been a fixture in the local sports scene since 1990. He is the current pre-and-postgame host for the San Diego Padres as well as a daily talk-show host at XX.
From his roots at Torrey Pines High School, where Kentera played and coached baseball, basketball, and football and coached the girls softball team, to a coaching career at Mira Costa College, Southwestern College and Texas Tech, "the Coach" has been a mentor to hundreds of student-athletes. Under his tutelage 34 players have been drafted or signed professional baseball contracts.
On a personal level, Kentera is known and admired for an "old school" mentality, living life daily with a frame of mind centered on family first, and outworking everyone.
"I've gotten to know Johns' character and leadership abilities, his extensive sports knowledge, and his solid soccer background," said Sockers co-owner Dave Pike, "'Coach' is so respected and well-liked throughout Southern California, he will take us to a new level of credibility. He's the perfect piece to add to our puzzle."
Kentera will oversee all aspects of the Sockers' operations, from sales and business to gameday. He replaces Sockers' co-owner and championship head coach Phil Salvagio, who remains as the team's coach for the 2010-2011 season.
"John Kentera has incredible experience, he knows sports, and he knows the business of sports. In my opinion he's one of the most upstanding men in San Diego," said Salvagio, "I'm happy to say, I've got a new boss!"
Kentera begins work immediately in preparation for the Sockers' season opener on November 20th at the Del Mar Arena. Tickets are available at the Sockers' website, www.sdsockers.com, as well as by phone at (866) 799-GOAL.
