Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - The Miners finished off the sweep of the Otters Wednesday night with a 5-2 win in the final home game of the regular season at Rent One Park. Brett Scarpetta picked up his eighth victory, setting a new franchise record for innings pitched in a single season. Erik Draxton finished the game off for his fifth save in five attempts. Kent Worthington took the loss, allowing two runs to score in a third of an inning of work. Stephen Head's solo blast in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie to give the Miners the lead for good. The Miners upped their league-best record to 63-30 on the season as they begin to pick up steam heading towards the playoffs.
Brett Scarpetta threw a season-high 124 pitches through seven and two-thirds of an innings in his final regular season start Wednesday night. After allowing a lead-off home run to Marcel Champagnie to start the game, the righty settled in. Scarpetta allowed two runs off nine hits, struck out six and yielded two walks. He will have over a week's rest before his first postseason start.
The Miners offense was slow out of the gate but picked up some momentum in the seventh when Stephen Head blasted his 13th home run of the season, giving the Miners a one-run lead, 3-2. Tyler Bullock came through in the clutch with a two-out insurance run, increasing the Miners lead to 4-2. Two batters later, Brad Netzel delivered another RBI single to give the Miners a three-run advantage. Southern Illinois scored their five runs off just five hits.
The Otters starter Chad Edwards pitched very well against the Miners for most of Wednesday's game. However, by the time he left the game he was down a run after allowing just one hit through the first six innings. It was Edwards' third start against the Miners this season. Edwards struck out five and yielded four walks, while giving up three runs on just three hits. He left with the no-decision after seven innings.
Following an off-day on Thursday, the Miners will head to the road to begin their final three-game series against Gateway on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Randy Johnson (0-2, 6.00) will be on the mound for Southern Illinois against Gateway righty Adrian Garza (1-0, 1.86) in the final series of the 2010 regular season. Southern Illinois will be seeking their third series victory against the Grizzlies this season. The Miners will return home for Game 1 of the 2010 Frontier League Division Series on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7:05 p.m. at Rent One Park.
