Cousins blasts Z's to 6-3 win over Las Vegas

Scott Cousins led off the first and eighth innings with solo shots, as the New Orleans Zephyrs launched three home runs defeating the Las Vegas 51s 6-3 on Friday night, taking the first and last games of the four-game tilt.

On the second pitch of the bottom of the first inning, Cousins drove his 12th home run of the year, off Las Vegas starter Shawn Hill (1-1).

The Z's added to their lead in the bottom of the second, when Danny Richar led off the inning with his sixth long ball of the 2010 campaign.

Z's starter Wes Whisler cruised through the 51s lineup until the top of the sixth inning before getting Danny Perales to ground out to Richar.

Whisler improved to 2-6 on the year, allowing two hits and four walks while striking out three over six innings.

After recording the final out in the top of the inning, Richar delivered a two-out RBI single before being thrown out at second, scoring Mark Saccomanno from first.

Cousins delivered his second led off homer in the eighth inning, his 13th of the 2010 campaign.

Cameron Maybin followed Cousins with a single and scored after Make Lamb singled and relief pitcher Merkin Valdez committed a throwing error.

Mark Saccomanno followed Lamb by reaching on a throwing error by third baseman Brad Emaus, scoring Lamb from second.

Scott Strickland entered the game in the top of the ninth and immediately allowed a lead off homer to Aaron Mathews, his ninth home run of the season.

Raul Chavez singled, Al Quintana followed with a double, advancing Chavez to third and Mike McCoy walked, loading the bases.

Taylor Tankersley entered the game with none out and the bases load but retired Chris Lubanski, Jason Lane and Brad Emaus on three straight fly outs for his first save of the year for NOLA.

The Z's now embark on a 12-game roadtrip before returning home to Zephyr Field for the final four games of the season.

The Z's start the 12-game roadie with four games against Albuquerque at Isotopes Park. Righty Adalberto Mendez (5-3, 3.61) squares off against fellow righty Geoff Geary in game one.
