Quakes Blow Late Lead, Remain One Game Out
August 5, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
The Quakes missed a golden opportunity to catch the High Desert Mavericks in the South Division, blowing a two-run lead in the ninth, losing 5-4 to the Lake Elsinore Storm in 12 innings, on Wednesday night at the Epicenter.
Jaff Decker hit a pair of homers, one in the ninth to tie and the game-winner in the 12th.
Leading 4-2 in the ninth, Eddie McKiernan walked Vince Belnome with one out, then, on a 3-2 pitch, allowed a two-out, two-run shot from Decker that just cleared the right field wall to tie the score at 4-4.
Three innings later, Decker went long in his second consecutive at-bat, giving the Storm their first lead of the game at 5-4 against Quakes' reliever Nick Pugliese (2-4).
The Quakes were off to an incredible start behind Kyle Hurst, who hurled five hitless innings, facing the minimum number of batters in just his second start of the season.
Angel Castillo enjoyed a two-homer night, putting the Quakes on the board 1-0 with a solo-shot in the third, then smashing his 16th homer of the season in the fifth, a two-run blast that put the Quakes up 3-0.
Hurst gave up his first hit in the sixth, then got into a bases-loaded jam with no outs, before being lifted for reliever Christian Scholl. Scholl allowed a two-run single off the bat of Brad Chalk, as the Storm pulled to within a run at 3-2. After a sac bunt by Cole Figueroa put two in scoring position with one out, Scholl settled down to fan the next two batters and get out of the inning with the lead in tact.
Rancho would add another run in the seventh as Kevin Ramos singled, stole both second and third, then scored on a Mike Trout groundout. Trout's fifth RBI as a Quake gave the Quakes a 4-2 advantage.
Decker's heroics netted Storm reliever Eric Gonzalez (5-3) the win, as he tossed a 1-2-3 11th. Brad Brach recorded his league-best 35th save with a perfect 12th.
The loss doesn't change the California League standings, as first-place High Desert lost to the Modesto Nuts 4-3 on Wednesday night in Modesto. The Quakes (21-18, 60-49) still trail the Mavs by one game in the California League South.
Orangel Arenas (4-1) and the Quakes will try to avoid the sweep on Thursday night as they take on lefthander Juan Oramas (6-1) in the final game of the three-game series. Thursday will be another Buffalo Wild Wings Thirsty Thursday as fans will enjoy $2 domestic 16 oz. drafts and $3 premium 16 oz drafts, as well as 20 oz Coca Cola products for just $2, thanks to Buffalo Wild Wings and X-103.9. Game time is 7:05pm and gates open at 6:05pm. We hope to see you at the Epicenter on Thursday...Go Quakes!
