Royals Sign Defenseman Steven Kaunisto

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed defenseman Steven Kaunisto ["kah KNEE stoh"]. Kaunisto (6'0/193) (23), who hails from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, joined the Royals late last season after completing his college eligibility at Lake Superior State University. In four games with Reading, Kaunisto scored a goal and picked up an assist. Prior to joining the Royals, in his senior season with the Lakers, Kaunisto scored four goals, led defenseman on the team with eleven assists (fifteen points) and picked up twenty penalty minutes in thirty-eight regular season games.

Kaunisto joined the Royals on March 11, 2010, after LSSU had been eliminated from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs. In his second game with Reading, Kaunisto registered his first pro point when he assisted on the Royals' first goal in what proved to be a 5-4 come-from-behind shootout victory over the Toledo Walleye at the Sovereign Center on March 13. In his next game, Kaunisto racked up his first pro goal when he scored the Royals' third goal while the team was playing short-handed in what turned out to be a 6-3 loss to the Elmira Jackals. While at Lake Superior State, Kaunisto registered a total of fifty-nine points (14g-45a59pts) and picked up sixty-eight penalty minutes in 154 total college games.

The Royals host the team's tenth anniversary home opener on Saturday, October 23, 2010 (7:05 pm), when the Elmira Jackals visit the Sovereign Center.
