San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, TX- Third-baseman Landon Camp's two-run homer (12) in the eighth inning proved to be the difference as the Colts defeated the Edinburg Roadrunners in dramatic fashion 6-5 on Saturday night at Foster Field.
The Roadrunners took their first lead of the series in the first on a double-play ball by rightfielder Nelson Teilon, which scored second-baseman Wilmer Pino from third to give Ediburg a 1-0 lead.
The Colts continued their homerun barrage in the bottom-half on a two-run homer from designated hitter Jason Crosland (18) to give San Angelo a 2-1 lead. It was Crosland's third round-tripper of the series and gave him seven RBI.
Edinburg came back to tie things in the second on an RBI groundout from designated hitter Alexis Ramirez. San Angelo, however, would once again respond via the longball as second-baseman Mark Ramos belted hit first professional homerun on a lined shot down the rightfield line to give the Colts a 3-2 advantage. It was San Angelo's fifth homer of the series as they drove in their first 10 runs of the four-game set by way of the longball.
That streak would end as the Colts added to their lead in the fifth on a Ramos double-play ball, which scored shortstop Butch Ballez to make the score 4-2.
Edinburg cut the lead in half on a sixth-inning solo-homer by first-baseman Carlos Hereaud (7) to make it 4-3. The Roadrunners finally retook the lead on a two-run homer by Nelson Teilon (1) to give Edinburg a one-run lead.
However, San Angelo would take the lead for good in the eighth. With a runner at first and two-out, Camp hit a routine pop-up on the infield, which should have ended the inning for Edinburg. But Roadrunner catcher Osiel Flores lost the ball in the lights, which fell foul to keep Camp's at-bat alive. On the next pitch, Camp sent his 12th homerun of the season over the leftfield wall to give the Colts the 6-5 lead.
From there closer Chace Vacek retired the side in the ninth while only facing four hitters to pick up his second save of the season. Gorman Romero (6-0) got the win in relief for the Colts by pitching 0.2 of a scoreless eighth. The loss fell to Ray Silva (2-2) who gave up the Camp two-run homer.
The Edingburg loss negated a good outing from their starter Wardell Starling who went seven innings while allowing four runs on seven hits. Colts starter Aaron Cunningham also pitched well, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out three in six innings of work.
The Colts and Roadrunners return to action Sunday in game three of their four-game series with a 6:05 start. Brian Henschel (4-5, 5.81) will go for San Angelo against Eric Montoya (7-2, 3.58 ERA) of Edinburg. Sunday will also be the Dog Days of Summer sponsored by the North Concho Verterinary Clinic as fans are invited to bring their dog to the game with proof of vaccination. There will be a pre-game parade for the dogs on the field at 5:30. The broadcast of the game begins at 5:50 with the Kemps' Pregame Show and can be heard on 1260 KKSA.
