Salem, VA (July 28, 2010)- Salem scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to transform a one-run deficit into a two-run advantage, and the Red Sox went on to defeat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 4-2 on Wednesday night at Lewis-Gale Field. The win was the Salem's 14th against Myrtle this year, establishing a new record for wins in a season against the Birds in Salem baseball history.
The decisive sixth inning saw seven Salem players come to the plate, led off by Mitch Dening's single to right. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Dening moved over to third as Peter Hissey laid down a perfect bunt single to place runners on the corners with nobody out. Oscar Tejeda then brought home Dening with a double to left to tie the game at two. Will Middlebrooks followed up Tejeda with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Hissey from third to give the Sox their first lead of the contest at 3-2. Alex Hassan continued the rally by lining a single to center to plate Tejeda and put the Sox up by two. Luis Avilan was able to retire the final two batters of the inning to stop the outburst, but the damage had been inflicted.
Myrtle Beach scored first for the third straight game, as L.V. Ware scored on a groundout by Cole Miles in the fifth to put the Pelicans up 1-0. Salem responded with a run of their own in the fifth, as Ryan Dent singled home Tim Federowicz, who had doubled to lead off the frame, tying the game at one.
The Pelicans regained the lead in the top half of the sixth on a two-out double by Gerry Rodriguez, scoring Jordan Kreke all the way from first base to put the Birds back on top at 2-1.
Miguel Gonzalez won his third straight decision to improve to 5-2 on the season. Gonzalez pitched a season-high six innings, yielding two runs while scattering seven hits, striking out three and walking one. The righthander is now 4-1 in July and has not lost since July 12.
Salem left just four runners on base in the contest, and was a robust 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Oscar Tejeda was the lone Salem batter to record multiple hits on a night where the Sox were outhit 8-7 by the Pelicans. The All-Star second baseman recorded two hits in three at-bats, including the game-tying double in the sixth. Tejeda has recorded 121 hits in 93 games this season, good for third in the Carolina League. His .317 batting average is also third-best in the league. Tejeda also stole two bases on the night, increasing his season total to 11.
After throwing Dan Nelson out twice on Monday's opener, right-fielder Mitch Dening recorded another outfield assist against the Pelican third baseman, throwing Nelson out attempting to advance to second on a leadoff single in the sixth.
The Sox improved to 30-18 at home on the season; overall, the Red Sox are 58-44, 16-16 in the second half.
The Red Sox welcome in the Lynchburg Hillcats for the first of three on Thursday night at 7:05 PM. Brock Huntzinger looks to bounce back from his loss to the Hillcats last week against Lynchburg's Curtis Partch, who shut out Salem last Saturday in the Hill City.
