(LANCASTER, CA) - Eric Surkamp and a trio of San Jose relievers kept Lancaster's offense off-balance all night long and the Giants claimed a 7-1 victory over the JetHawks at Clear Channel Stadium Sunday. The Giants struck for three runs off JetHawks starter Dallas Keuchel in the top of the second. James Simmons hit a two-run single and Juan Perez drove in a run to give San Jose a 3-0 edge.
San Jose added an unearned run off Keuchel in the sixth and an earned run off Lancaster reliver Shane Wolf in the seventh to extend its lead to 5-0.
The JetHawks got on the scoreboard with a run in the eighth when Andy Simunic drove in David Flores with an RBI single.
Surkamp allowed just one hit and no runs through two and 1/3 innings before leaving the ballgame with an injury. But San Jose's bullpen picked up the slack as relievers Ryan Verdugo (1-0), Edwin Quirarte and Brian Anderson allowed just one run in six and 2/3 innings of work
Keuchel (5-8) yielded eight hits and four runs, three of which were earned, in six innings pitched and recorded his ninth consecutive quality start. Unfortunately for Lancaster, he was charged with the loss.
With the win, the Giants improved to 9-15 in the second half and 54-40 overall. The JetHawks fell to 10-14 and 33-61 overall.
The JetHawks will attempt to avoid a series sweep when the two teams meet Monday at Clear Channel Stadium. Lancaster will start right-hander Kyle Greenwalt (3-6, 6.31 ERA). The Giants are expected to counter with right-hander Justin Fitzgerald (6-2, 3.45 ERA).
