San Jose Giants News Release

THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... begin a six-game road trip this evening with the first of three straight contests against the High Desert Mavericks at Stater Bros. Stadium. San Jose was swept in a three-game set by the visiting Lake Elsinore Storm in their most recent series. The Storm earned an 8-2 victory last Saturday before a 9-3 win on Sunday and a 5-1 triumph on Monday afternoon. In the series finale, the Giants were limited to four hits with Charlie Culberson's ninth-inning homer accounting for the only run. Eric Surkamp took the loss on the mound despite striking out 10 over seven innings of work. Surkamp, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, surrendered two runs (both earned) on three hits. Cody Decker homered twice Jesus Lopez also went deep to lead the Lake Elsinore offensive attack.

Media Coverage... The entire series from Adelanto can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com with Joe Ritzo calling all of the action. All 140 games this season will be aired on the club's official website.

Second Half Struggles... The Giants enter tonight's action with a 5-14 record in the second half - last in the North Division. Eight of San Jose's 14 losses have been by one or two runs. The Giants have won consecutive games just once (July 7-8) since the All-Star break.

San Jose Looks To Avoid Fifth Straight Defeat... The Giants need a victory tonight to avoid a season-high five-game losing streak. The current four-game slide matches their longest losing streak of the season. San Jose has dropped four straight games on two other occasions this year: May 7-10 and June 28-July 1. The last time a Giants club lost five in a row was from July 12-18, 2008 when they lost six straight. During the current losing streak, San Jose is a combined 2-for-32 (.063) with runners in scoring position while starting pitchers own a 6.00 ERA (14 ER/21.0 IP).

Road Team Dominates Giants-Mavericks Season Series... The road team has won all seven games played between San Jose and High Desert this season. The Mavericks won four straight games at Municipal Stadium from May 7-10 marking the first time since 2004 that the Giants had been swept at home in a four-game series. San Jose then swept a three-game set in Adelanto from June 14-16. The Giants scored 29 runs in the three victories, including a 15-11 win in the middle game that clinched the first half North Division title.

Versus The South... Last Saturday marked the beginning of a stretch where the Giants will play 18 out of 21 games against teams from the South Division. San Jose is 8-11 against South Division opponents this season.

Peguero File... Outfielder Francisco Peguero returned to the club on Monday after playing in the Futures Game Sunday in Anaheim. Peguero was one of two representatives (pitcher Zach Wheeler) from the San Francisco organization selected to participate in the exhibition contest. Peguero started at DH for the World Team and finished 1-for-2 with a single. In 72 games with the Giants this season, Peguero is batting .289 with four home runs and 44 RBI's. He's third in the league in triples (9) and stolen bases (30). Peguero is batting .392 over his last 13 games.

Stolen Base Leaders... The Giants have stolen 150 bases this season - five ahead of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes for the most in the California League. Francisco Peguero (30), Ehire Adrianza (20), Charlie Culberson (15), James Simmons (14) and Juan Perez (13) are leading the club in steals. The team record for stolen bases in a season is 233 (1989).

Biery Returns, Ambort Placed On Disabled List... Third baseman Drew Biery (throat contusion) was activated from the disabled list yesterday. Biery hasn't played since July 5 after taking a groundball off his neck in a game at Bakersfield. He's hitting .276 with eight homers and 40 RBI's this season. First baseman Michael Ambort (elbow) has been placed on the DL.

San Jose Wins League Record Sixth Consecutive First Half Title... The San Jose Giants have won their California League record sixth consecutive first half North Division title. The Giants finished the first half with a 45-25 mark - eight games ahead of both the Modesto Nuts (37-33) and Visalia Rawhide (37-33). By virtue of winning the first half, San Jose secures a berth in the playoffs and will receive a first round bye. The Giants have won three league championships (2005, 2007, 2009) in the last five seasons and will be attempting to win back-to-back titles for the first time in franchise history this September. San Jose will open the playoffs on Saturday, September 11 at Municipal Stadium with Game One of the best-of-five North Division Series. The previous league record for consecutive first half division titles was three (Visalia).

High Desert Mavericks... The High Desert Mavericks, an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, enter tonight's action with an overall record of 48-41 and an 11-8 mark in the second half - tied for first in the South Division. High Desert leads the California League in batting average (.298), runs scored (6.0) and home runs (106). The Mavericks are ninth in the league in ERA (4.86). Johermyn Chavez (20, 2nd) and Denny Almonte (17, T4th) both rank among the top four in the league in homers.
