Stars Take Game One Of The Series, 5-4

After a 2 hour and 12 minute rain delay at Trustmark Park, the Mississippi Braves and Huntsville Stars resumed action in the top of the 1st inning. The Huntsville Stars saw a 5 run lead slip down to a 1 run lead in the 9th, but Mississippi couldn't get put together another run. The Stars take game 1 of the series, 5-4.

With the score 0-0, Chuckie Caufield hit his 1st home run of the season in the top of the 4th inning to make the score 1-0, Huntsville. The score remained 1-0 till the top of the 7th, when Huntsville had it's biggest inning of the game. The Stars sent 8 batters to the plate and scored 4 runs to take a 5-0 lead. Huntsville had hits from Lorenzo Cain, Brett Lawrie, Martin Maldonado and Scott Kriegal. The biggest hit of them all was the 2-run triple by Brett Lawrie.

Mississippi has scored almost 33% of it's runs in the 8th and 9th innings this season and once again saved their best for last tonight. In the 8th, Mississippi picked up a double from Randy Gress, who eventually scored on a single from Donell Linares. Alex Romero, who walked to reach, scored on an Eric Duncan single and the Braves trailed 5-2 after the 8th.

In the 9th, the MBraves collected hits from Willie Cabrera and Randy Gress to put bring the tying run to the plate. Orlando Mercado then walked to load the bases with just 1 out. Following a strikeout to Travis Jones, Alex Romero singled up the middle to score 2 runs and get the Braves to within a run. With the tying run at second and the winning run at first, Donell Linares lined one straight to Lorenzo Cain in center to end the game. Cain used his glove to finish the game, as well as robbing Mauro Gomez of a home run in the 7th inning.

Final Score, Stars 5, Braves 4.

Friday night will see game two of this series when Mississippi will pitch LHP Mike Minor (1-3; 3.43) vs. RHP Mark Rogers (2-3; 4.20). First pitch is set for 7:05.
