Capitals Lose On GBL's Opening Day

May 20, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

The Edmonton Capitals let one slip away on Opening Day of the Golden Baseball League. The team committed three errors and gave up three unearned runs including a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to fall 5 - 4 to the Tucson Toros in game 1 of the GBL season.

You couldn't ask for a better start to the game for the Edmonton Capitals. Lead-off batter Tim Battle launched a solo shot 400 feet over the left field fence in the first at-bat of the year. The Caps jumped out to a 2 nothing lead after the first inning and were never really in any trouble until the late stages of the game.

Second baseman Eric McNamee scored on a sacrifice fly from returnee Jorge Cortes in the second inning to give the Capitals a 3 nothing lead after two. Battle would add his second home run of the year leading off the fifth inning to give Edmonton a 4 - 1 lead that held until the bottom of the eighth inning.

Wally Backman Jr. belted a two out, bases loaded triple to tie the game at four with one swing of the bat. Golden League rookie Ryan Paul was the victim on the mound for the Caps at that time.

In the end it was a bases loaded walk issued by Belleville, Ontario pitcher Scott Kelly that allowed Tucson's Ryan Priddy to waltz home for the winning run to make the final score 5 - 4.

The four game series continues Thursday night at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson.

The Edmonton Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Capitals season seats start at under $9 per game and individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. The Caps Home Opener is scheduled for Tuesday, June 1 at TELUS Field. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, at (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
