Tucson Toros News Release

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Toros scored 11 runs behind starting pitcher Albie Lopez en route to a 11-6 victory over the Edmonton Capitals Thursday night. The win improved Tucson's record to 2-0 on the season, good for first place in the GBL Southern Division.

Lopez went five innings to earn the win in what was his first start since June 25, 2002, a span of 2887 days. The righty allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits and 5 walks while striking out 4 in his Toros debut.

Tucson erased an early 2-run deficit with 5 runs in the bottom of the 2nd, with CF Josh Womack and 2B Jose Valdez hitting back-to-back triples in the inning. The Capitals briefly tied it up with 3 runs in the 3rd, but Tucson took back the lead in the bottom of the frame and never looked back.

Four different Toros hitters recorded 3 hits in the offense outburst including Valdez, RF Victor Ferrante, C Luis Apodaca and 1B Cristobal Santana. One of Santana's hits was a 2-run 7th inning laser home run to left, the first longball for Tucson this season. Cristobal finished with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

The Toros and Capitals will play game three of the four game series on Fireworks Friday, with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch. The game can be heard live on COOL 1450 AM or video streaming over the internet at www.tucsontoros.com.
