The opened their best-of-seven Atlantic Division Semifinal Series with consecutive home ice losses to the Manchester Monarchs. Manchester prevailed 2-1 in Game 1 in come- from-behind fashion on Friday and jumped out to a 3-0 first- period lead in Game 2 Saturday and hung on for a 3-1 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the series.
The Monarchs scored twice in the opening five minutes of the third period on their way to a 2-1 win over the Pirates in Game 1 of the series played Friday at the CCCC. John Zeiler and Bud Holloway struck in a 2:15 span to erase a 1-0 Pirates advantage. Derek Whitmore struck for the only Pirates goal.
Corey Elkins, Holloway and Trevor Lewis scored first period goals to lead the Monarchs to a 3-1 win over the Pirates in Game 2 of their Atlantic Division Semifinal Series played Saturday at the CCCC. All the Manchester offense came in a span of 5:34 seconds in the second half of the opening period. Whitmore netted the lone Pirates goal, his second of the series.
This Week:
The final five games of the Atlantic Division Best-of-Seven series between the Pirates and Monarchs could potentially be played this week. Games 3 and 4 will take place Monday and Tuesday in Manchester. If necessary, Game 5 of the series will return to the CCCC Thursday at 7 p.m. followed by Game 6 Saturday at 7 p.m. in Manchester and Game 7 Sunday at 7 p.m. at the CCCC.
Monday, April 19th and Tuesday, April 20th (Verizon Wireless Arena), 7 p.m.
J.P. Lamoureux was between the pipes for the Pirates in Games 1 and 2. The rookie goaltender turned aside 58 of the 62 shots he faced (.932 save percentage) in the two games.
Both Portland goals in the series were scored on the power play by Whitmore.
Portland's leading scorer, Mark Mancari, was held without a shot in the first two games of the series.
The Pirates surrendered a playoff franchise-record tying 21 shots in the second period of Game 2. Portland allowed 21 shots in a twice previously in the post season.
The two loses extended the Pirates playoff losing streak to six games.
Holloway netted the game winner in Games 1 and 2 of the series. The second year forward lead the Monarchs in scoring during the regular season with 47 points in 75 games.
Manchester goalie Jonathan Bernier allowed only two goals on 46 shots in the first two games.
