Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON- The Ottawa 67's needed a power play goal in overtime to beat the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors, 2-1 today at the Hershey Centre. Ottawa now leads the best of seven series 2-1.
After surrendering seven goals on Friday night in game two, the Majors put on a much stronger display defensively and created several chances for themselves throughout the game. Petr Mrazek and Chris Carrozzi were busy for their teams and were key factors in the low score line. While the first period of play didn't provide any goals it was not short of chances for both sides including a scare for Ottawa. In the opening minute of the game forward Anthony Nigro went down after being checked by Dustin Ekelman. Nigro stayed down for a couple minutes and left the game, he did return later in the period. The teams both failed on power play opportunities, but Ottawa's best chance came at 15:41 of the first. Blake Parlett dove and took down Shane Prince who had a clear path to the goal. The referee awarded a penalty shot, as the crowd booed loudly Prince took his chance only to be stopped by Carrozzi to keep the score line locked at 0-0. Carrozzi then stopped Cody Lindsay and Tyler Toffoli's two-on-one attempt in the final minute keeping the game scoreless.
Mississauga went on the power play again in the opening minute of the second but again failed to capitalize on the advantage. At 4:21 the Majors took the lead courtesy of Casey Cizikas, with his third of the post season. Devante Smith-Pelly began the rush for the Majors and passed to Riley Brace; Brace beat his defender and passed cross ice to Cizikas who beat Mrazek sending the crowd into a frenzy. The 67's drew even just over five minutes later with a bad bounce. Jon Carnevale fired the puck at Carrozzi, the initial shot was saved and a loose bouncing rebound came off the goaltender. Shane Prince made up for his failed penalty shot by knocking in the loose puck to tie the game at 1-1. Ottawa had two more power play opportunities in the period but failed on both attempts.
The third period provided nothing so the teams headed to sudden death overtime. Mississauga started the extra frame on the power play and had several opportunities on goal; they just couldn't finish the play. After the power play had expired Ottawa turned up the pressure, causing Carrozzi to make a series of saves. The Majors took a penalty for too many men on the ice and it proved to be the dagger in this contest. Cody Lindsay scored the game winning goal at 7:55 on the power play to win the game for Ottawa. Petr Mrazek made 37 saves for Ottawa, while Carrozzi made 36 saves for Mississauga in a losing effort.
The teams will meet up again on Tuesday for game four of the series at the Hershey Centre, starting at 7:00 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets contact the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1.
Notes: Ottawa defenceman Tyler Cuma left the game in the second period with an undisclosed injury and did not return. T.J. Battani who left Friday's game was not in the line-up for Mississauga. Mississauga finished the game 0/4 on the power play dropping their playoff total to 3/33.
