St. George RoadRunners Name Darrell Evans 2010 SkipperMarch 28, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL) - St. George RoadRunners
"We are extremely pleased to be able to hire a manager of his caliber" said club President, Will Joyce. "Darrell brings an extraordinary wealth of experience and knowledge to the RoadRunners. Baseball authority Bill James has called him the most under rated player in baseball history."
A former third baseman and first baseman in Major League Baseball, Evans' playing career in the majors spans 21 years with the Atlanta Braves, the San Francisco Giants, and the Detroit Tigers (World Series Champions in 1984). Over that career, he hit 414 home runs and batted in 1,354 runs.
"Darrell has a history of winning wherever he's been and will help the RoadRunners develop a championship approach to the game" Joyce added. "Nobody knows the game better than Darrell Evans. He won the Giants' 1983 Willie Mac Award for his spirit and leadership."
Evans was a 2 time All-Star selection (1973, 1983), and is the first player to hit 40 home runs in both leagues. At age 38, he became the oldest player ever to lead the league in home runs. Evans hit over 20 home runs in 10 different seasons and drew over 100 walks 5 times, with a career high 126 in 1974. In 1988, he hit his 400th home run, becoming the 22nd player to reach that milestone. He retired after having joined Reggie Jackson in becoming only the second player to hit 100 home runs with three different teams, and ranking in 11th place among all-time walks leaders. Evans hit 60 home runs in his 40s, at the time a major league record. He later served as a coach with the New York Yankees, in 1990.
Evans was selected as the third baseman on the 1973 Sporting News National League All-Star team.
Evans' managerial career includes time as the manager for the Long Beach Armada, managing the Armada to the GBL championship series in his final year with the team in 2007. He was Bench Coach and hitting coach for 2008 GBL champion Flyers. Evans was the first manager and director of player personnel for the expansion Victoria Seals of the Golden Baseball League in 2008.
In 2009, Evans was Field Manager for the Palm Springs Chill. The Palm Springs Chill is a team in the instructional California Winter League.
Evans is excited about the RoadRunners' prospects for the 2010 GBL season. "There are some very good teams in the league" he acknowledges, "but this team will be as good as any, and we're in it to win it all in 2010."
