U.S. Nat'l U18 Team Falls to Sioux Falls, 7-2

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Bill Arnold (Needham, Mass.) and Austin Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) each scored for the U.S. National Under-18 Team as it fell to the Sioux Falls Stampede, 7-2, here tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

Sioux Falls struck just 1:18 into the game when Josh Holmstrom's shot squeezed past Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.) to make it 1-0. Ryan Misiak doubled the Stampede's lead when he banged home a rebound from the top of the crease at 11:21. With just 1.2 seconds remaining in the first stanza Connor Allen's left-point slapshot beat Campbell through a screen to make it 3-0.

The Stampede kept the pressure on when Matt Farris scored on a rebound just 2:10 into the middle period. Team USA answered shorthanded 2:21 later when Matthew Nieto (Long Beach, Calif.) sent a stretch pass to Arnold, who broke down the left wing, cut to the middle and slid a shot between netminder Clay Witt's legs to make it 4-1. With the teams skating four players a side at the 9:21 mark, Matt Bailey knocked home a rebound from the right side of the crease past new U.S. netminder Andy Iles (Ithaca, N.Y.). With just 1:40 to play in the frame, Michael Voran one-timed a feed from Mark Anthoine under Iles's right arm and in to give Sioux Falls a 6-1 advantage.

Czarnik gave the U.S. some life at the 6:06 mark of the final stanza when he slipped a shot through Witt from a bad angle. Just 57 seconds later, however, Bailey followed Anthoine's rebound and wristed the puck past Iles to score what proved to be the last goal of the night.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team returns to action Sunday at 7:05 p.m. EST when it meets the Des Moines Buccaneers at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Sunday's contest represents the last home game of the 2009-10 campaign for the Under-18s.
