Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, CA - Tom Donald (Buchanan Baseball), Cliff Rold (Edison Baseball) and Shannon Gorton (Clovis North Softball) have been named as finalists for Hot Stove Coach of the Year. The honor, along with four other awards presented by Ruth's Chris Steak House, will be handed out at the 49th Annual Hot Stove Banquet on Thursday, February 4th at the Holiday Inn Downtown Fresno.
Tom Donald led Buchanan High School to a 24-5-1 record, including a 13-2 mark in league play, in his 11th season at the helm. The Bears outscored their opponents 221-81 on the season, notching three-game league sweeps of Central, Clovis East and Madera.
Cliff Rold guided an Edison High School squad that started the year 4-8 on an improbable run, as the Tigers won 18 of their final 21 games. That included 10 straight victories to close out the season on the way to the CIF Central Section Division II crown, the school's first baseball title in its 84-year history.
Shannon Gorton took the reins for Clovis North High School Softball's inaugural season with a team comprised of no upperclassmen- just eight sophomores and five freshmen. That didn't deter the Broncos, who made it all the way to the Central Section Division III semi-finals before falling to eventual champion Hanford West.
The nominees for Hot Stove Female Player of the Year and Male Player of the Year as well as the winner of the 2010 Al Radka Award will be released later this week.
The Fresno Grizzlies Hot Stove Banquet, presented by Tecate, will also feature top Giants prospect Buster Posey, former Giants pitchers Dave Dravecky and Mark Gardner, and 2010 Grizzlies manager Steve Decker. Tickets for the event, which benefits the Fresno Grizzlies Community Fund, are $60 for adults, $30 for children, and $550 to reserve a table of 10.
