GM gives perspective on steroids in baseball

Amarillo Dillas News Release

AMARILLO, TX - Tryouts, steroids, and kids are the focus of this week's Q&A Session with Dillas General Manager Mark Lee. The former major league pitchers' response to steroid use in baseball and who should or shouldn't be in the MLB Hall of Fame provides a sobering message about the effect on youth.

Will W. (Unknown Location) - What do I need to do in order to get a tryout next year?

Every year the United League hosts a nation-wide tryout for interested players in April. Tryout location, information, and registration will be posted on the league website at www.unitedleague.org. Just visit that website as we get closer to March and April. The Dillas will hold their 5th Annual local tryout in early May just before the start of the one-week Spring Training. We haven't finalized the day and time for the tryout but that information will be available on our website, www.myamarillodillas.com, in April.

Frank R. of Amarillo, TX -Do you think baseball players who admit to using steroids, like Mark McGwire, should be in the Hall of Fame?

I pitched in the big leagues in the late 70's and early 80's which was a time when you never heard of guys taking steroids now, does that mean it wasn't happening I don't know but you certainly didn't hear about it. I can't speak on the behalf of any player who makes the choice to take steroids or performance enhancing drugs but, I will say that it doesn't project the right type of role model for young kids who dream of playing in the big leagues or professional sports for that matter. It just sends the wrong message to these kids. Athletes who take steroids will have to live with the consequences of their decisions. Should players who admit to using or have tested positive for steroids be in Cooperstown? I'm not sure that is for me to say but guys who don't get in because of their actions, they only need look in the mirror to find someone to blame.

Cheryl D. of Canyon, TX - We have three kids and we enjoy taking them to see the Dillas play, can you tell me will the Dillas have anything new for kids this year?

We are committed to affordable family entertainment and this is something that will never change. We are changing several things for the upcoming season that will be unveiled as we get closer to the start of the season, but one of the newest promotions will be "Kids Eat Free Tuesdays". Children 12 and under will receive a hot dog and small soft drink with the purchase of ticket and when accompanied by an adult who also purchases a ticket at regular price. This promotion will only be valid for families who purchase tickets at the stadium on Tuesdays. Advance ticket purchases and Fan Flex Tickets are not valid for the promotion.

The Amarillo Dillas Baseball Club is a charter member of United League Baseball, a Professional Independent League, with six teams playing in Texas. ULB teams are located in Amarillo, Coastal Bend, Edinburg, Harlingen, Laredo, and San Angelo.
