Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets are launching an aggressive initiative aimed at encouraging children in the CSRA to read more often, with a slew of rewards involved for participating students.
The program is called Auggie's Book Club and will run from shortly after the start of the year until the early portion of the baseball season. Schools will choose one of four GreenJackets games - April 17, April 24, May 7 or May 8 - to serve as the program's culmination. Once the program is launched, teachers will determine four different achievement levels for their students to reach. These will be set up with baseball in mind - single, double, triple and home run.
Prizes will be awarded by the number of "bases" each child reaches with the home run prize including a ticket to the GreenJackets game that the school has predetermined. Other prizes will be provided by participating vendors in the area.
Each child will receive a bookmark to use throughout the program. All children who hit a home run in the program and bring their bookmark to the ballpark on the day of their school's outing will be entered into a grand prize drawing. In addition, schools that are interested in participating will have the chance to have Auggie come out and read to a classroom or assembly as a "kickoff" to the program. Spots are limited and will go to schools on a first come, first serve basis.
An updated list of suggested books for the participating children will appear on the team's official website, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com, through the duration of the reading program.
Teachers with questions about the program or that are interested in participating may contact Emily McDonald for more information at (706) 922-9467
The GreenJackets play their 2010 home opener at Lake Olmstead Stadium on April 16th of next year. 2010 Season Tickets are currently available and can be purchased by calling the GreenJackets front office at (706) 922-WINS.
