Fatal Collison Claims Diablos Pitcher

El Paso Diablos News Release

EL PASO- The El Paso Diablos acquired a rising star at the end of the season just this past summer in RHP Max Limonick. Limonick passed away October 2nd, eight days after the car in which he was a back seat passenger in, was rear ended by a drunk driver. Limonick was born in Beverly Hills, California and was currently residing in Clearwater, Florida. Limonick joined the team August 21st and finished of the season with the Diablos. The El Paso Diablos and the Ventura Sports Group organization are very saddened at the loss of such a great, young talent.

"Max came to us late in the year, but did a great job! He was an outstanding individual in and out of the clubhouse and worked hard all the time. The world has not only lost a good ballplayer but a good kid much too soon. This really put things into perspective...we play this game for a living, when tragedy strikes and you lose one of your own, it makes things really hard," stated Field Manager Butch Henry.

According to Elizabeth Watts, spokeswoman for Clearwater's public safety departments, Limonick was in the back seat of a Nissan sedan that had stopped for a red light at the intersection when the car was struck from behind by a Toyota Tundra. The driver of the Tundra watched as the firefighters cut up the 1999 Nissan sedan to extricate Limonick, he asked a police officer how bad Limonick's injuries were, and he was told they were significant. A search warrant has been issued to continue the investigation as a possible DUI investigation.

The Diablos will retire Limonick's number at the beginning of next season. For more information on how you can help out the Limonick family, please contact Matt LaBranche at 915-755-2000.
