Elmira, NY - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (pre-season, 0-1-0), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, opened the pre-season with a 3-1 loss to the Elmira Jackals at First Arena in Elmira, New York. The Jackals capitalized on an early power play chance and picked up what proved to be the game winner while playing with the man advantage in the second. Royals' goaltender Kevin Regan (pre-season loss: 0-1-0, 25/27, 1 eng) played solid throughout several surges of offensive opportunity for the Jackals. Michael Teslak (no decision, 31/32, 58:42) was outstanding for Elmira, but the win was credited to Bud Fisher (1-0-0, 1/1, 1:18), who substituted into the game for a short span, but happened to be in net when the game winner was scored. The Royals went 0-4 on the power play despite creating a number of good scoring chances with the man advantage; the Jackals went 2-8 on the power play.

Olivier Proulx, who factored in all three goals scored by the Jackals, opened the scoring 5:14 into the game with a re-direct of a shot by Jean-Francois David from the point that slipped by Regan. The Royals tied the game 4:51 into the second when Ben Gordon finished on his own rebound after he was set up on a deft passing sequence in front of the net between Danick Bouchard, Ben McLeod and Ryan Crane. However, 2:28 later, the Jackals got what proved to be the game winner on an equally good passing sequence of their own at the right side of the Royals' net while Elmira was on the power play. Proulx and Tyler Donati worked to free Chaz Johnson in front of the net. Johnson's quick shot snuck between the knees of Regan to give the Jackals all they would need. Proulx added an empty netter with forty-seconds left to ice the victory.

The Royals complete the pre-season tomorrow (Sunday, October 11, 2009) when they face the Trenton Devils at the Sovereign Center (5:05pm). That game, which is presented by The Reading Eagle, WEEU, and WRFY Rock Hits Y102, is free of charge. Fans can gain admission simply by presenting the coupon that is available in the Reading Eagle. The Reading Parking Authority has also reduced the parking rate in lots close to the Sovereign Center to just $2.00 in order to encourage everyone in the Greater Reading Region to come enjoy an afternoon of ECHL hockey.

The Royals open the 2009-10 ECHL season on Thursday, October 15, 2009 (7:05 pm) when the Kalamazoo Wings make their first visit ever to the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania.
