Mad Ants Hire Michael Sanders As Assistant CoachOctober 8, 2009 - NBA Development League (D-League) - Fort Wayne Mad Ants Press Release
Coach Sanders will be entering his 12th year of coaching, including four years in the NBA D-League under Joey Meyer, the Mad Ants recently named head coach, for the Asheville Altitude. The coaching duo led the Altitude to back to back NBA D-League Championships in 2004 and 2005.
"Coach Sanders is a real vet, he's coached in both the NBA and the D-League. He can really relate to the players since he has experienced the ups and downs as a player in both the NBA and minor leagues," said Coach Meyer. "We worked very well together back in Asheville, and I think he will be a great addition here in Fort Wayne. "
Not only does Sanders have D-League coaching experience, but he has also served as assistant coach for two out of the three Mad Ants' affiliates, the Detroit Pistons (2000-2001) and the Milwaukee Bucks (2005-2007). Sanders also served as assistant coach and scout for the Charlotte Bobcats (2007-2008).
Sanders entered the coaching ranks in 1998 as an assistant coach with the Wisconsin Blast of the International Basketball Association. He has also served as head coach with the Black Hills Gold (1999-2000) and Washington Congressionals (2000) of the IBA, as well as head coach of the Adirondack Wildcats (2002-04) of the United States Basketball League. He most recently was the head coach of the Minot Skyrockets of the CBA (2008-2009).
Sanders had a successful 11-year NBA playing career with San Antonio, Phoenix, Cleveland and Indiana. He averaged 8.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists over 648 career games.
A native of Vidalia, La. but raised in DeRidder, Sanders was inducted into the Louisiana Hall of Fame on June 24, 2000. He graduated from UCLA in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in History.
Sanders has two children, a son, Lamar, and a daughter, Kendra.
