DAYTONA BEACH - The Chicago Cubs selected outfielder Tyler Colvin from Double-A Tennessee on Monday. Colvin was a Florida State League All-Star for Daytona in 2007 and started the 2009 season with the D-Cubs.
The Clemson product drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in his first Major League at-bat in the first inning against Milwaukee. Colvin then picked up his first big-league hit with a single to right field off of Braden Looper. On the night, Colvin went 1-for-3 with a walk and a RBI.
Chicago's first-round draft pick (13th overall) in 2006, Colvin helped lead Tennessee to the Southern League championship series this year. The left-handed batter hit .300 (92-for-307) with 51 runs, 13 doubles, seven triples, 14 homers and 50 RBI in 84 Double-A games this season. Following "Tommy John" surgery on his left elbow in November of 2008, Colvin began the 2009 campaign with Single-A Daytona and combined to hit .286 (120-for-419) with 18 doubles, nine triples, 15 homers and 60 RBI in 116 games with the two clubs. With Tennessee, Colvin recorded a season-high 17-game hitting streak, August 14-September 1, going 27-for-66 (.409) during the stretch.
