September 19, 2009 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

Brian Bocock hit a go-ahead three-run double in the top of the fourth inning before San Jose held off several late High Desert rallies to earn a 7-5 victory over the Mavericks in Game Two of the Championship Series on Friday evening at Stater Bros. Stadium. Daniel Turpen picked-up the save with two scoreless innings to finish the contest as the Giants take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series. The series now shifts to San Jose for Game Three on Saturday evening with first pitch at Municipal Stadium scheduled for 6:00 PM.

Bocock (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) added a solo home run to lead a 10-hit Giants offensive attack. Francisco Peguero (2-for-5, 3B) and Roger Kieschnick (2-for-4) also finished with multi-hit games while Johnny Monell (1-for-4, HR, RBI) connected for his second home run of the postseason.

Paul Oseguera recorded the win on the mound after limiting High Desert to a pair of runs over 5 2/3 innings. The San Jose starter allowed six hits with three walks and five strikeouts during his stint on the mound. Turpen (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) stranded the potential tying runs on base in the bottom of the eighth before working a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the Giants victory.

With the game tied 1-1, Thomas Neal began the fourth-inning rally by drawing a one-out walk. Kieschnick then singled before Conor Gillaspie walked with two outs to load the bases. Bocock was up next and he lined the first pitch from Mavericks hurler Mauricio Robles to the fence in left field for a double as all three runners scored to give San Jose a 4-1 lead.

The Giants added a run in the top of the fifth when Peguero singled with one out before scoring three batters later on Josh Mazzola's fielder's choice ground out.

High Desert cut into the lead with a single run in the bottom of the sixth as Kuo Hui Lo tripled with one out and then scored on Joe Dunigan's sacrifice fly to left. Consecutive singles from the next two hitters, Brent Johnson and Travis Scott, put runners on first and second prompting a pitching change as Ryan Verdugo was summoned from the bullpen. Verdugo then quickly got out of the inning retiring Juan Diaz on a fly out to right.

The Mavericks kept the pressure on in the bottom of the seventh as Verdugo issued a leadoff walk to Tyson Gillies before a one-out walk to Alex Liddi put runners on first and second. After Carlos Peguero flied out, Lo grounded an RBI single up the middle to bring High Desert to within 5-3. Verdugo though recovered to set down Dunigan on a sharp ground out to first keeping the Giants lead at two runs.

San Jose reclaimed the momentum in the top of the eighth when Bocock drove a fly ball over the fence down the left field line for a solo home run. Monell followed with an opposite field home run to straightaway left extending the Giants lead to 7-3.

High Desert though continued to rally as Ryan Shaver entered the game to begin the bottom of the eighth and quickly allowed three consecutive hits as the Mavericks scored two runs. Pinch-hitter Jamie McOwen led off with a double to the left center field gap before Scott lined a single into right. On the play, Kieschnick mishandled the ball for an error as McOwen scored and Scott advanced all the way to third base. Diaz followed with an RBI single into left to cut the San Jose lead down to 7-5.

Turpen was then summoned from the bullpen with a runner on first and none out as Gillies stepped to the plate and he lined out softly to Bocock at shortstop. Bocock then fired the ball to first to complete a double play on Diaz for the second out of the frame. Jeffrey Dominguez and Liddi though followed with back-to-back singles to bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate, but Turpen induced Peguero to fly out to shallow center field ending the threat.

In the bottom of the ninth, Turpen struck out pinch-hitter Kyle Seager on a 3-2 pitch before Dunigan grounded out to second and McOwen flied out to center.

Robles suffered the loss for High Desert after surrendering five runs (all earned) on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. The left-hander walked four and struck out five.

All five of his hits in the postseason have been extra-base hits (four doubles and one home run) ... High Desert out-hit San Jose by a 12-10 margin ... The Mavericks stranded 11 on the bases.

On Deck: The Giants and Mavericks play Game Three of the series on Saturday evening with San Jose needing only one more victory to win the California League championship. First pitch at Municipal Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
