Mississippi RiverKings News Release

(Southaven, MS) --- The Central Hockey League's Mississippi RiverKings are adding some major league experience to their roster for the upcoming season, as Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin "Killer" Kaminski has announced the signing of forward Cam Severson to the 2009-2010 team roster.

It will be a return connection for the pair, as Kaminski was an assistant coach under Mike Babcock with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the American Hockey League, when Severson played there during the 2000-2001 season.

Severson comes to the RiverKings after playing 37 career NHL games split between Anaheim and Columbus, along with three seasons playing in Europe and several years in the American Hockey League (AHL), ECHL, Central Hockey League, and elsewhere. His career totals include 572 professional games, 131 goals, 103 assists, 234 points and 1454 penalty minutes.

Kaminski is excited to coach Severson again, saying the veteran winger will be a big part of the foundation laid by the CHL Northeast Division champions last season. "I was fortunate to have the opportunity to coach him in Cincinnati," Kaminski says. "He's a guy with a lot of heart, work ethic, pride and knows what it takes to get to the next level as scrapped his way to the NHL."

Severson played in 33 games over two seasons with the Mighty Ducks (2002-03 and 2003-04). He also played in four games during the 2005-06 campaign with Columbus. His NHL career statistics include three goals and 63 penalty minutes.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Severson spent last season playing for Steaua (Bucharest) in Romania, where he started the year as a player and ended the season coaching the team as the first NHL player to play professionally in Romania. His other European experience came with Staubing in the German Elite League and with Linz EHC in Austria, between which he totaled 24 goals, 37 points, and had 181 PIMS over two seasons.

Severson says after playing in Europe the past three seasons, he's eagerly anticipating a return to North American hockey with the RiverKings. "I'm looking forward to come and play a rugged style," Severson says. "I've been in Europe and over there the game is a little different and it's not my style of game. I'm just looking forward to getting back and playing a rugged style and getting back to doing what I do."

The native of Canora, Saskatchewan was an eighth round draft choice (#192 overall) of the San Jose Sharks in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. Severson's most productive season offensively was the 2000-2001 season with the Quad City Mallards of the United Hockey League, when he scored 22 goals and added 26 assists for 48 points with 129 penalty minutes. That same season, Severson scored four goals, 11 points and 60 penalty minutes with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks in the American Hockey League. He also appeared in eight games that season with Portland of the AHL.

The RiverKings' coach expects Severson to be valuable in several areas. "He will be one of the best guys in shape, and will demand and make everyone accountable in the locker room. He also will lead by example. He will be a huge presence in the corners, net front; he is a great example of a power forward. We are very excited to have Sever be a part of the RiverKings' family!"
