Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC-The Charlotte Checkers have extended their National Hockey League affiliation with the New York Rangers for the 2009-10 season, general manager and head coach Derek Wilkinson announced today.

The two teams have been affiliated for a 16-year span dating back to the 1994-95 season. Over that period the Checkers have played an integral part in developing young players and prospects for the Rangers and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Hartford Wolfpack.

"We are very pleased to have extended our affiliation with the Charlotte Checkers," stated Jim Schoenfeld, Rangers' assistant general manager, player personnel. "Having this working relationship with a respected organization affords us the perfect platform to grow and develop our prospects."

Over the years 15 players have gone on to play for the Rangers after spending time in Charlotte, including Jason LaBarbera, Eric Cairns and Daniel Girardi. Most recently, Corey Potter, who split the 2006-07 season between Charlotte and Hartford, made his Rangers debut in 2008-09, appearing in five games with the Blueshirts.

The 2008-09 season also saw six players called up to Hartford from Charlotte. These players combined for 190 games of AHL action. Defenseman Jared Nightingale, originally signed to a Checkers contract, was called up to Hartford in December and spent the remaining 49 games with the Wolfpack.

"It is a privilege for us to once again be working with the New York Rangers and Hartford Wolfpack," said Wilkinson. "Their professionalism and dedication to icing championship-caliber teams are trademarks of theirs. We look forward to continuing our tremendous track record of developing future Wolfpack and Rangers players."

The Checkers are getting ready for their 17th season of play as a member of the ECHL and 16th as an affiliate of the New York Rangers. In the team's 16-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 12 times including five consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are entering their fifth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. Season tickets are on sale now.
