'Caps draggin' after tough loss to Dayton

DAYTON, OH- Gustavo Nunez's error in the bottom of the twelfth inning allowed the winning run to score in the Dayton Dragons' 5-4 triumph over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Field. The Whitecaps had tied the game in the top of the ninth with three runs, and the ‘Caps took the lead in the top of the twelfth before Dayton's rally. The series is now tied at one game apiece.

The Dragons looked to starter Mark Serrano to help them even the series. Serrano, throwing for the first time against the ‘Caps, worked seven outstanding innings. He gave up 2 hits with no walks and ten strikeouts but did not get a decision.

Dayton second baseman Cody Puckett put the Dragons on the board first with his seventeenth home run in the third. Dayton led 1-0.

The Dragons added to the lead with RBI hits from Carlos Mendez and Miquel Rojas for a 3-0 lead.

West Michigan regrouped to tie the game in the ninth. Gustavo Nunez reached base on an error, Mike Gosse followed with a hit, and Alden Carrithers collected an infield hit to score Nunez. Jordan Lennerton grounded out to first to bring in Gosse, and the ‘Caps were within a run. With two outs, Avisail Garcia continued his clutch hitting with a game-tying hit to plate Carrithers.

Mike Gosse put the Whitecaps ahead in the twelfth his two-out, RBI hit that chased home Angel Flores, and put the ‘Caps in front, 4-3.

But in the bottom of the twelfth, Dayton loaded the bases with no outs. Carlos Mendez's slow roller to short went under the glove of Nunez into the outfield, and two runs scored to give Dayton the win, 5-4.

Adam Wilk started for the ‘Caps and scattered 5 hits over 5 innings with one runs allowed. Wilk walked one and struck out four.

Victor Larez was tagged with the loss.

Gosse, Garcia, and Palacios each had 2 hits for the Whitecaps.

Game three of the series will be played at 7:00 p.m ET on Thursday at Fifth Third Field.
