FISHKILL, N.Y. (August 2, 2009) - After a 1:42 rain delay the Renegades fell to the division rival Brooklyn Cyclones 5-3 Sunday night at Dutchess Stadium. The rain delay was the Renegades 10th of the season and third in the past five days.
In the top of the fourth Cyclones center fielder Justin Garber recorded the first hit of the game with a leadoff single. Later in the inning with two outs and two on, third baseman Tyler Vaughn hit a seeing eye single up the middle which drove in the Cyclones first run of the game.
Renegades shortstop Tyler Bortnick recorded the first hit for the âGades in the bottom of the fourth. Eli Sonoqui quickly doubled the âGades hit total with a swinging bunt single down the third base line. Heads up base running by Bortnick and Sonoqui allowed them both to advance into scoring position on Elias Otero's pop out to center field.
With two outs and runners on second and third Brett Nommensen, dunked a ball into right center field, which brought the score 2-1. Nommensen scored the Renegades third run of the game on a Mayo Acosta double to center field. Acosta's double brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Renegades.
Brooklyn struck back slowly plating a run in five consecutive innings, which brought the score to its final, 5-3.
The Cyclones proved why they are among the elite in the league with runners in scoring position when they knocked in a run on a single in the top of the seventh to take the lead 4-3. The offense continued for the Cyclones in the top of the eighth off righty Hunter Hill, when catcher Dock Doyle knocked in their fifth run of the game on a single to left field to make the score 5-3.
Glenn Gibson suffered his third loss of the year, after hurling two innings of three-hit, two-run baseball. Picking up the win for the Cyclones was Brandon Sage who improved his record to 2-0 on the season.
The Renegades head down to Brooklyn tomorrow to take on the Cyclones at KeySpan Park for the finale of the two-game home-road series. The Cyclones will be giving the ball to southpaw Mark Cohoon (6-1, 2.42) and the Renegades will be giving the nod to righty Alexander Colome (4-1, 1.76)
