The Newark Bears defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7-2 at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in downtown Newark, NJ.The Bears were strong out of the gate scoring three runs in the first inning. Charlton Jimerson swiped his twentieth stolen base of the season and scored on a Tike Redman RBI groundout. Second baseman Andres Perez picked up one run off of two hits.
Newark's left-hander Matt Smith pitched an impressive five and two thirds innings allowing only two earned runs off of four hits. Shane Komine notched his first save of the season after holding off the Crabs for three and a third innings striking out four, allowing no runs. Southern Maryland's Joe Gannon pitched for eight innings allowing five earned runs and took the loss, which brings his record to 7-11 for the season.
The win and a fireworks display concluded "Pink at the Park" at Riverfront Stadium, after Ambassador Nancy Brinker participated in pre-game festivities representing Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The Bears will face the Blue Crabs on Saturday and Sunday at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. On Sunday there will be a special autograph session featuring legendary managers Tim "Rock" Raines and Butch Hobson prior to the game.
