HOOVER, Ala. - With their 7-3 victory over the Birmingham Barons on Friday night at Regions Park, the BayBears became the first team in the Southern League this season to grab a series from the mighty Barons as they snagged four of six in their set.

As he did in the previous contest, Pedro Ciriaco assisted the BayBears (44-38, 7-5) to the early lead as he reached on an error by shortstop Robbie Hudson. Ciriaco advanced to third on a two-out single by Bryan Byrne which was followed by Cyle Hankerd's RBI knock, putting the BayBears on top.

In the second, Ricardo Sosa ripped the first pitch that he saw from Charlie Shirek (2-2) out of the yard to make it 2-0. With two outs in the third, Byrne went deep for the second time this season to give the BayBears a 3-0 cushion.

As usual, Birmingham (52-28, 4-7) did all they could to keep the BayBears hot under the collar as they battled back with a run in the home half of the third as Christian Marrero led off with a single and scored on a sac fly by John Shelby. Shelby came through again in the fifth with a two-out double to drive home Javier Colina.

It stayed 3-2 until the eighth thanks largely in part to Wes Roemer (4-5) who soaked up eight frames for the BayBears while holding the Barons to two runs on seven hits. Most notably, the Birmingham 3-4-5 hitters were a combined 0-for-9 against Roemer as he fanned five.

In the eighth, the BayBears pulled away as Hankerd drilled a two-run double to the left-field corner to bring home Ciriaco and Chris Rahl. Eli Rumler's sac fly made it 6-2 while Byrne doubled Rahl to the plate in the ninth, putting the visitors up 7-2. Tyler Flowers smacked a thunderous blast to straightaway center in the ninth off Kyler Newby, who went on to retire the final three batters.

The BayBears are home for Independence Day as they host the Chattanooga Lookouts on Saturday night at 7:05 with Jarrod Parker (4-3, 2.87) on the hill. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with the Annual Mayor's Cup Softball Game starting at 5:30 For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
