San Jose Giants News Release

Clayton Tanner limited the Modesto Nuts to one run over 5 2/3 innings while relievers David Mixon and Steve Edlefsen combined to strikeout seven over the last 3 2/3 frames leading the San Jose Giants to a 3-1 victory on Sunday night at John Thurman Field. Brian Bocock drove home a pair of runs and Thomas Neal contributed three hits to lead the Giants offensive attack as San Jose (46-28) extended their winning streak to seven games.

Tanner (6-2) earned the win on the mound scattering six hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Mixon worked 1 2/3 hitless innings out of the bullpen before Edlefsen struck out five and surrendered just one hit during the last two frames to pick-up the save.

Modesto threatened throughout the entire game, but the Nuts stranded 10 on the bases and were 0-for-10 batting with runners in scoring position. Facing Tanner, Modesto put runners on second and third with one out in the third and fourth innings, but failed to score in each frame. With the Giants ahead by a 2-0 score, a one-out walk followed by an error and then a wild pitch put a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third. Tanner though recovered to strikeout Charlie Blackmon before Radames Nazario grounded out to shortstop.

In the fourth, Matt Repec singled with one out before Jason Van Kooten doubled to again put runners at second and third. But Tanner once more pitched out of it striking out Wilin Rosario and then inducing Lars Davis to bounce out to shortstop.

Michael Mitchell and Blackmon produced back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the fifth, however Tanner retired Nazario on a pop out before Jay Cox struck out on three pitches to keep the Giants ahead.

San Jose initially took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning against Nuts starter Brandon Durden. Darren Ford started the rally with a single before he was picked off at first on a stolen base attempt. However on the play, the first baseman Repec threw wildly down to second allowing Ford to advance into third. Durden bounced back to strikeout the next hitter, Tyler Graham, before Bocock singled sharply up the middle to score the first run of the night.

Neal followed Bocock's hit with a single of his own and then Roger Kieschnick delivered a fielder's choice RBI ground out to make it a 2-0 contest.

The Giants scored their final run of the night in the top of the fifth when Graham belted a one-out triple to the fence in deep right center field before Bocock's sacrifice fly to right.

Modesto finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth as Van Kooten tripled with one out forcing a pitching change as Mixon was summoned from the bullpen. Rosario followed with a soft ground out to third base, however the play scored Van Kooten to bring the Nuts to within 3-1.

Mixon then worked through a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh to keep Modesto off the scoreboard before Wilmin Rodriguez surrendered back-to-back singles to Cox and Repec beginning the eighth. Edlefsen was then brought into the game and he promptly induced Van Kooten to ground into a fielder's choice as Cox was forced at third. Rosario and Davis then both struck out swinging to strand the potential tying runs on base.

In the ninth, Edlefsen struck out the first two hitters before Blackmon singled sharply up the middle to bring the tying run to the plate. However, Edlefsen quickly disposed of Nazario striking out the Nuts shortstop to seal the Giants victory.

Neal (3-for-4) and Graham (2-for-4, 3B) both finished with multi-hit games for San Jose while Kieschnick (1-for-4, RBI) extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an eighth-inning single.

Durden (3-3) suffered the loss for the Nuts despite throwing a complete game. The left-hander, who returned to the California League after making his last five starts in Double-A, allowed 11 hits and three runs (all earned) with no walks and four strikeouts.
